Breaking News: Maha: 1 killed, 8 injured in Akola clash

One person was brought dead to civil hospital here after the violence erupted over a religious post which went viral on a social media platform in Maharashtra's Akola, the official said.

Akola/Nagpur: One person was killed and eight others, including two policemen, sustained injuries after a clash erupted between two groups in Maharashtra’s Akola city over a social media post, a senior police official told UNI on Sunday.

According to the official the violence took place on Saturday evening at around 11.30 pm in the Old City area.

The two groups pelted stones at each other. Some vehicles were also damaged in the incident, the official said.

Heavy security was deployed in the city following the incident, the official said.

Cops also used tear gas to disperse the rioters and the situation is now under control, the official said adding that 30 people have so far been detained in connection with the incident.

District Collector Neema Arora ordered the imposition of Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is also the guardian minister of Akola district, appealed to people to maintain peace.
