Chicken Prices Surge in Hyderabad and Telugu States as Heat Wave Pushes Rates Near Rs 400 Per Kg

Chicken prices in Hyderabad and Telugu states surged to Rs 350-370 per kg due to heat waves, reduced poultry supply, and rising transport costs.

Chicken prices have increased sharply across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh due to intense summer heat and heat wave conditions affecting the poultry sector.

In Hyderabad, the price of skinless chicken has reportedly reached Rs 350 to Rs 370 per kilogram, while live chicken is being sold between Rs 190 and Rs 220 per kilogram in several markets.

Traders and poultry operators said chicken supply has reduced significantly because of severe heat conditions, leading to a sudden rise in prices across the Telugu states.

Chicken Rates Increase by Nearly Rs 100 Per Kg

According to market traders, chicken prices have increased by almost Rs 100 per kilogram in some places within a week.

A week ago, skinless chicken prices were reportedly between Rs 240 and Rs 250 per kilogram.

Now, the prices have increased to Rs 350 to Rs 370 per kilogram, creating an additional burden on consumers.

Traders stated that many families who previously purchased one kilogram of chicken are now reducing purchases to half a kilogram due to the rising prices.

Poultry Sector Hit by Heat Wave Above 45 Degrees Celsius

Poultry operators said the extreme heat is the major reason behind the sharp increase in chicken prices.

According to them, temperatures in many parts of the Telugu states have crossed 45 degrees Celsius over the past ten days.

Officials and traders stated that chickens are suffering from severe heat stress, due to which:

  • Chickens are not eating properly
  • Birds are becoming weak
  • Large numbers of chickens are dying

This has reportedly reduced the number of chickens reaching markets.

Supply Drops in Mehdipatnam, Dilsukhnagar and Secunderabad Markets

Traders stated that chicken supply has dropped heavily in major Hyderabad markets including:

  • Mehdipatnam
  • Dilsukhnagar
  • Secunderabad

Due to reduced supply, wholesale prices increased, which in turn raised retail prices for consumers.

Market sources said demand remains moderate, but disrupted supply chains are keeping prices high.

Transport and Chicken Feed Costs Also Increase

Traders stated that rising chicken feed prices and transportation costs have also contributed to the increase in chicken rates.

According to them, poultry transporters are making special cooling arrangements during transportation to protect chickens from extreme summer heat.

This has reportedly increased transport expenses significantly.

Chicken Prices May Cross Rs 400 Per Kg

Market sources warned that if severe summer temperatures continue, chicken prices may cross Rs 400 per kilogram in the coming days.

Currently, chicken prices across most Telugu states are ranging between Rs 360 and Rs 370 per kilogram.

Fish and Mutton Become Alternative Choices

With chicken prices rising sharply, many consumers are reportedly shifting towards fish and mutton.

According to traders:

  • Mutton prices in Telangana are currently between Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,200 per kilogram
  • Fish varieties such as Porch, Ravva, and Golden Wire are being sold up to Rs 220
  • Korramenu fish is being sold for more than Rs 600

Despite higher rates, some consumers are considering fish and mutton as better alternatives compared to expensive chicken.

Chicken prices in Hyderabad and other Telugu states have increased sharply due to extreme heat wave conditions affecting the poultry sector. Skinless chicken prices have reached Rs 350 to Rs 370 per kilogram, while live chicken rates are between Rs 190 and Rs 220 per kilogram. Traders and poultry operators said temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius, chicken deaths, reduced supply, rising transport costs, and higher feed prices are responsible for the sudden hike. Market sources warned that prices could cross Rs 400 per kilogram if heat conditions continue.
