Hyderabad: The Telangana Food Safety Department has intensified its crackdown on the manufacture and sale of adulterated ghee, seizing 850 kg of suspected adulterated ghee during a statewide special drive. Food Safety Commissioner Dr. Sangeetha Satyanarayana said inspections were conducted across the state on July 14 and 15 in coordination with the police. Officials collected 91 ghee samples for laboratory testing, issued notices to five firms for violations, and said strict legal action will be taken based on the test results.

Statewide Special Drive Against Adulterated Ghee

According to Food Safety Commissioner Dr. Sangeetha Satyanarayana, the Food Safety Department launched a statewide special inspection drive following credible information that some manufacturers were adulterating ghee by mixing palm oil, vanaspati and other fats.

The inspections were conducted on July 14 and 15 with the coordination of the police.

Officials found that some licensed manufacturers had allegedly mixed other fats into ghee, while several firms were manufacturing and selling ghee without any licence or registration.

Samples were collected from the concerned firms and sent for laboratory testing.

The Commissioner said legal action will be taken against those found violating food safety regulations after the laboratory reports are received.

Food Safety Standards for Ghee

Dr. Sangeetha Satyanarayana said that under the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, ghee must contain:

  • 99.5% milk fat
  • Moisture content should not exceed 0.5%

She added that mixing palm oil, vanaspati or other vegetable fats into ghee is prohibited under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

850 Kg Suspected Adulterated Ghee Seized in Hyderabad

During a special drive in the Hyderabad CURE area, Food Safety officials inspected 14 establishments.

During the inspections:

  • 15 ghee samples were collected.
  • 60 kg of ghee found unfit for consumption was destroyed on the spot.
  • 850 kg of suspected adulterated ghee was seized.

The Commissioner said the seized products will be kept in safe custody until laboratory reports are received.

If adulteration is confirmed, strict action will be taken against the concerned Food Business Operators (FBOs).

Statewide Inspection Findings

During the statewide inspection drive, Food Safety Officers inspected 65 establishments across various districts.

The drive resulted in:

  • 65 establishments inspected
  • 91 ghee samples collected and sent for testing
  • Five firms issued notices for violating regulations

Commissioner Advises Consumers to Stay Alert

Food Safety Commissioner Dr. Sangeetha Satyanarayana urged consumers to purchase ghee only from licensed and trusted manufacturers.

She advised consumers to:

  • Check the FSSAI licence number before purchase.
  • Verify the manufacturing label.
  • Preserve the purchase bill safely.

She also appealed to consumers to immediately report suspected adulterated food products or businesses selling food without licences to the Food Safety Department.
