Hyderabad: In a major step towards sustainable waste management in Hyderabad, GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan launched a QR-based E-Waste Disposal Ecosystem to ensure safe and responsible handling of electronic waste. The system includes 30 drop boxes across stores, doorstep pickup services, awareness drives, and reward incentives, and is now operational with further expansion underway.

GHMC QR-Based E-Waste Disposal Ecosystem Launched in Hyderabad
The Commissioner GHMC RV Karnan officially launched a comprehensive, QR-enabled E-Waste Disposal Ecosystem aimed at safe, responsible, and sustainable handling of electronic waste across Hyderabad.
Electronic waste has been identified as a serious threat to human health and the environment if not disposed of properly. The Government of India classifies e-waste as a special category of waste, allowing only authorized agencies to handle its collection and processing.
Efforts Since January 2026
The GHMC Commissioner stated that:
- Since January 2026, GHMC has undertaken extensive e-waste collection efforts
- Conducted awareness programs across the city
- Now transitioned from short-term efforts to a long-term, self-sustaining ecosystem
This system aims to make responsible e-waste disposal accessible to all citizens.
30 E-Waste Drop Boxes Installed Across Hyderabad
Under the GHMC e-waste ecosystem, a Drop-Box Facility has been introduced:
- 30 e-waste drop boxes installed
- Located across retail outlets of major electronics stores:
- BigC
- BNew
- Happi
- LOT
- Sangeetha
- Select
- Touch
- Citizens can locate drop points using QR access
- As of 21 April 2026, all stores have operational and standardized drop boxes
Doorstep Pickup Service for E-Waste
GHMC has also introduced a Doorstep Pickup Service:
- Citizens can soon request pickup via a QR-enabled system
- Partnered with Hyderabad-based authorized e-waste recyclers:
- Earth Sense
- Recytronics
- Pure Earth
- Z Enviro
- Green Enviro
- All recyclers have been onboarded and trained
Awareness Drives and Collection Events
As part of the initiative:
- Ward-level awareness programs will be conducted
- E-waste collection drives will be organized
- Citizens will be educated on environmental and health impacts
All collected waste will be processed strictly by authorized recyclers as per regulatory guidelines. Event locations will be announced soon.
Rewards for Responsible Disposal
The GHMC Commissioner announced incentives:
- Citizens disposing of e-waste responsibly will receive:
- Appreciation certificates
- Redeemable reward points
- Points can be used at approved Self Help Groups, including:
- Shilparamam
- Other partner agencies (with expansion plans)
Benefits of the E-Waste Ecosystem
The initiative is expected to:
- Strengthen source segregation
- Increase citizen participation
- Enable effective waste tracking
- Reduce burden on landfills
