Hyderabad Metro Plans to Purchase Additional Coaches to Ease Growing Passenger Rush

Hyderabad Metro Rail Additional Managing Director B. Ajith Reddy has directed officials to initiate discussions with manufacturing companies at the earliest for the procurement of new metro coaches to meet the growing demand for public transport services in the city.

Hyderabad: In a move aimed at addressing increasing passenger congestion at some of the city’s busiest metro stations, Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) has decided to procure additional metro coaches to enhance capacity and improve commuter convenience.

The initiative is expected to ease overcrowding at key stations including Ameerpet, Miyapur, Raidurg and Hitec City, which witness heavy passenger traffic, particularly during peak hours.

During a review meeting, officials also focused on improving traffic management around metro stations and strengthening last-mile connectivity for passengers. Authorities were instructed to coordinate closely with the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) and the Transport Department to ensure smoother onward travel for commuters after they exit metro stations.

The meeting also reviewed plans to streamline passenger movement across the 69-kilometre Phase-I metro network. Officials noted that Hyderabad Metro has emerged as one of the city’s most important modes of public transportation and stressed the need to further strengthen its infrastructure and services.

Hyderabad Metro Managing Director Shivendra Pratap stated that the organisation’s top priorities include providing better passenger amenities, maintaining cleanliness, ensuring effective security measures and improving crowd management across the network.

Discussions were also held on enhancing pedestrian access in and around metro stations, testing new operational strategies at selected stations, maintaining and expanding existing skywalks, and improving connectivity between metro stations and railway terminals.

The meeting further reviewed the progress of the proposed Public Rapid Transit System (PRTS) project aimed at improving connectivity to major IT and business hubs such as Hitec City, Raidurg, Gachibowli, Financial District and Kondapur.

Officials also received a detailed briefing on existing metro security arrangements and reiterated their commitment to ensuring safe, comfortable and efficient travel for passengers across the Hyderabad Metro network.
