Hyderabad: Two railway bogies, parked under a shade at Kacheguda railway station, have been transformed into a unique restaurant named Pariwar Foodexpress. Unlike typical train-themed venues, these real railway bogies are serving as a novel dining experience. Originally from Chennai, these 32-year-old bogies were brought to Kacheguda by South Central Railways. This establishment marks Telangana’s first train-themed restaurant at a railway station.
The restaurant has gained popularity among nearby college students, who not only enjoy the food but also take Instagram-worthy selfies inside and around the coaches. The bright blue bogies are adorned with golden stencil patterns and can be entered via a short flight of iron steps. These refurbished heritage coaches boast impressive interiors, with one resembling a traditional Rajasthani home and the other designed as a luxury restaurant.
South Central Railways CPRO Ch Rakesh explains the bogies’ journey, stating that they were originally part of the meter gauge AC lounge car and dining cum kitchen car. Built in 1991 for Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC), these coaches were initially intended for the “Palace on Wheels” train. Over the years, they served various tourism initiatives before being converted into this unique restaurant.
Inside, the restaurant maintains a true train atmosphere with decorative lights, colorful curtains, and a reflective mirror roof. One bogie even offers slightly lower seating and a bar. The restaurant can be booked for private events, and an outdoor seating arrangement has been added by Parivar Havmor, the company operating the restaurant services. Despite being retired for over a decade, the coaches were well-maintained, requiring only minor touch-ups.
While the space provides a soundproof feeling, it’s not a lounge but a place to grab a quick bite. The restaurant has separate kitchens for vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, catering to various dietary preferences. Being situated in the station’s parking area allows easy access for anyone interested in this unique dining experience.
