Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Traffic Police have launched a stringent drive against the use of fake, altered and designer vehicle number plates across the city, warning that violators will now face criminal cases in addition to traffic penalties.
According to traffic police officials, five criminal cases have been registered and several vehicles have been seized during a special enforcement campaign conducted across the city over the past week.
Police said complaints had increased in recent months regarding motorists using fake or modified registration plates to conceal the identity of their vehicles, evade traffic challans and violate road safety regulations.
The cases have been registered in the jurisdictions of Jubilee Hills, Malakpet, Begum Bazaar, Abids and Kacheguda police stations, officials said.

The Hyderabad Traffic Police clarified that only government-approved High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) are legally permissible for vehicles. The use of decorative or non-standard fonts, alterations to the plate design, incorrect display of registration numbers, or the use of temporary stickers in place of official number plates constitutes a violation of the law.
Authorities have urged all vehicle owners to ensure that their vehicles are fitted with HSRP number plates in accordance with prescribed regulations and to comply fully with traffic rules.
Reiterating its zero-tolerance policy, the traffic police warned that vehicles found using fake or altered number plates would be immediately seized and criminal proceedings would be initiated against those responsible.
Officials stated that the special enforcement drive will continue across Hyderabad in the coming weeks with the objective of improving compliance with traffic laws, strengthening road safety and preventing vehicle-related crimes in the city.
