HYDRAA Action Only for Those Who Don’t Pay Commissions? Questions Raised Over Villa Project Near Dundigal Cheruvu

According to allegations, a prominent construction company is developing around 150 villas on a site that falls within the buffer zone of the large Dundigal Cheruvu lake. The project is reportedly being promoted as a villa community spread across 8.25 acres, located around two kilometres from the Outer Ring Road.

Hyderabad: Questions are being raised over the construction of a large villa project allegedly coming up within the buffer zone of Dundigal Cheruvu in Hyderabad.

According to allegations, a prominent construction company is developing around 150 villas on a site that falls within the buffer zone of the large Dundigal Cheruvu lake. The project is reportedly being promoted as a villa community spread across 8.25 acres, located around two kilometres from the Outer Ring Road.

The controversy has intensified over claims that irrigation officials had written to the concerned authorities around 18 months ago, stating that the proposed construction site was located within the lake’s buffer zone.

Despite the reported communication, allegations have surfaced that the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) subsequently granted permissions for the project.

The issue has also raised questions over the alleged silence of HYDRAA, municipal authorities and HMDA officials. Critics are questioning why action has allegedly not been taken against the project despite the earlier identification of the site as falling within the buffer zone.

The developments have triggered political and public criticism, particularly over the government’s stated commitment to protecting lakes, ponds and other water bodies in Hyderabad.

Critics have also questioned whether the stringent actions taken by HYDRAA in other cases are being applied uniformly. They have pointed to statements by HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath and Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy regarding lake protection and demanded clarity on the permissions granted to the villa project.

However, the allegations regarding commissions have not been independently established. The concerned authorities and the construction company have not yet publicly responded to the claims.

Residents and activists are demanding a transparent inquiry into the project’s approvals, the reported buffer-zone status and whether all relevant environmental and planning regulations were followed.
