KIMS Gachibowli Performs Robotic-Assisted Mitral Valve Replacement on 37-Year-Old Patient

Hyderabad: KIMS Hospital, Gachibowli, has successfully performed a robotic-assisted mitral valve replacement on a 37-year-old patient from Rajahmundry, marking a significant development in minimally invasive cardiac surgery in Hyderabad.
The patient, an accountant working for a prawn export company, had been suffering from severe mitral stenosis caused by chronic rheumatic heart disease, according to Dr. Nisarga, Chief Cardiothoracic, Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgeon at KIMS Hospital.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Dr. Nisarga explained that the mitral valve, located between the heart’s left atrium and left ventricle, regulates blood flow between the two chambers. In patients with mitral stenosis, the valve becomes narrowed and thickened, restricting blood flow and increasing pressure on the heart. If untreated, the condition can result in serious and potentially life-threatening complications.
The robotic-assisted procedure was performed on July 23 and lasted more than five hours. Dr. Nisarga said robotic intracardiac procedures remain relatively uncommon in Hyderabad, with robotic-assisted mitral valve replacement being a particularly specialised procedure.

Unlike conventional open-heart surgery, which involves opening the breastbone, the robotic technique uses small keyhole-sized incisions. The approach can reduce surgical trauma, blood loss, infection risk and post-operative pain while facilitating faster recovery.
According to the medical team, the patient was taken off ventilatory support within hours of the surgery and was able to walk the following day.
“For young patients, conventional open-heart surgery can be physically and psychologically daunting. With robotic technology, we were able to replace the damaged valve with exceptional precision while significantly reducing surgical trauma,” Dr. Nisarga said.
The surgical team included cardiac surgeon Dr. Vineeth, cardiac anaesthesiologists Dr. Divya, Dr. Gorintha and Dr. Bhavani, senior surgical assistant Mr. Manoah, senior clinical perfusionists Mr. Dayakar Swamy and Mr. Jagan Mohan, and junior perfusionist Mr. Abhishek.
KIMS Hospitals said the successful procedure reflects the growing use of advanced robotic technology in cardiac surgery in Hyderabad and its efforts to expand access to minimally invasive cardiac care.
