HYDRAA Intensifies Krishna Nagar Flood Control Works, AV Ranganath Orders Faster Desilting and Safety Measures

HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath inspected desilting works in Krishna Nagar and Malkam Cheruvu, directing faster flood-control measures, installation of iron grills, and completion of inlet desilting within one week.

Hyderabad: HYDRAA has intensified its focus on Krishna Nagar in the Jubilee Hills constituency to provide a permanent solution to recurring flood problems that have caused vehicles to be swept away during heavy rains. HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath inspected the ongoing desilting works on Saturday and directed officials to accelerate the work in coordination with GHMC ahead of the monsoon season. He also ordered the installation of iron grills at locations where slabs have been removed for desilting operations.

The commissioner also conducted a field inspection of flood canals around Malkam Cheruvu near the Shaikpet-Gachibowli main road and issued several instructions to improve floodwater management.

HYDRAA Special Focus on Krishna Nagar Flood Problem

HYDRAA studied the causes of severe flooding in Krishna Nagar, where heavy rains often result in floodwaters inundating roads and sweeping away vehicles.

The agency had earlier decided to implement a permanent solution and has intensified efforts to completely remove silt that has accumulated over several decades.

HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath inspected the desilting works underway in Krishna Nagar on Saturday.

He had previously directed officials to remove slabs obstructing desilting operations and complete the work efficiently.

Considering the approaching monsoon season, he instructed HYDRAA officials to increase the pace of work in coordination with GHMC.

Slabs Removed to Facilitate Desilting Works

The commissioner noted that delays by the contractor had affected progress in some areas.

As a result, HYDRAA itself removed slabs at certain locations and undertook desilting works to ensure progress.

A.V. Ranganath also issued clear instructions to the contractor engaged through GHMC, directing them to immediately bring any obstacles to HYDRAA’s notice and ensure complete removal of accumulated silt.

He stated that comprehensive desilting would significantly reduce the flood threat in the area.

Iron Grills to Be Installed After Completion of Works

According to HYDRAA, decades of accumulated silt have obstructed floodwater flow from Jubilee Hills and Venkatagiri areas.

Flood canals with a depth of 10 feet have become filled with silt up to nearly 7 feet.

To address the issue, slabs were removed and extensive desilting works were undertaken.

After completion of the works, the commissioner directed the contractor to install strong iron grills to prevent accidents.

Expressing dissatisfaction, A.V. Ranganath said these works should have been completed much earlier and noted that despite multiple inspections, the expected progress had not been achieved.

He further stated that, apart from diverting flood canals through narrow lanes, HYDRAA would also move forward with plans related to the main flood canal carrying water from Venkatagiri.

The commissioner said expert opinions would be obtained to ensure that the proposed works crossing the main road along the Metro route do not affect Metro pillars.

HYDRAA Commissioner Inspects Malkam Cheruvu

A.V. Ranganath also conducted a field inspection of flood canals around Malkam Cheruvu, located adjacent to the Shaikpet-Gachibowli main road.

During the inspection, he expressed displeasure over the sluice gate being constructed to reduce water levels in the lake, stating that it was not designed to withstand flood conditions adequately.

The commissioner observed that improper lake inlets and outlets have resulted in flooding becoming a recurring annual problem in the area.

Orders Issued to Improve Malkam Cheruvu Flood Management

According to the commissioner, floodwater can flow smoothly only if the lake water level is reduced by two metres.

He directed concerned officials to take measures accordingly.

The commissioner also instructed officials to:

  • Complete desilting works at the inlets within one week.
  • Expand the sluice gate at the outlet.
  • Install the sluice gate at a lower level.
  • Use robotic technology to remove silt from pipelines laid beneath the main road.

Officials Present During Inspection

The inspection was attended by:

  • HYDRAA Additional Director Varla Papaiah
  • Irrigation Department officials
  • Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (Water Board) officials
  • GHMC officials

Conclusion

HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath inspected ongoing desilting works in Krishna Nagar and flood management works at Malkam Cheruvu on Saturday. He directed officials and contractors to accelerate desilting operations, remove decades-old silt deposits, install iron grills after completion of works, and improve floodwater management infrastructure. HYDRAA aims to provide a permanent solution to flooding in Krishna Nagar before the onset of the monsoon season.
