Heavy Rain Brings Relief but Causes Waterlogging
Vijayawada
The weather changed suddenly in Vijayawada on Sunday as dark clouds covered the city.
Heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning caused widespread waterlogging on roads, creating inconvenience for motorists and pedestrians. However, residents welcomed the cooler weather after enduring intense heat and humidity.
Khammam
Heavy rain lashed Khammam city on Sunday evening.
Major roads were submerged after nearly an hour of continuous rainfall. Overflowing canals caused water accumulation, disrupting traffic.
The Old Bus Stand area witnessed knee-deep waterlogging, making commuting difficult for motorists.
Moderate rain with gusty winds also affected:
- Wyra
- Konijarla
- Tallada and surrounding mandals
The rainfall caused electricity disruptions in several areas, while farmers welcomed the showers, saying they brought relief to cotton crops.
Southwest Monsoon to Advance Further
The IMD said the Southwest Monsoon is likely to advance into more parts of the country during the next 2–3 days.
Europe Faces Record Heatwave
While India is witnessing widespread rainfall, Europe is experiencing an intense heatwave.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO):
- More than 13,000 people have died due to heat-related causes in the nine days since June 21.
- Temperatures have crossed 40°C in many countries.
- Several regions recorded temperatures between 43°C and 45°C.
- Around 150 million (15 crore) people are living under extreme heat conditions.
The WHO warned that the European continent is warming twice as fast as the global average.
The organisation also reported:
- Power grids are failing.
- Schools have been closed.
- Heatwaves that were once expected once in a generation are now occurring every year because of climate change.
The WHO urged European countries to immediately implement Heat Health Action Plans to protect vulnerable groups, including the elderly and the sick, and reduce urban heat.
The report also noted that although Europe lies far north of the Equator, its longer daylight hours allow roads and buildings to absorb intense solar heat throughout the day because sunlight falls at an angle.
The IMD has issued a Yellow Alert as Telangana and Andhra Pradesh prepare for widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning over the coming days. Several districts have been placed under heavy rain warnings, while cities including Vijayawada and Khammam have already experienced waterlogging due to heavy showers. At the same time, Europe continues to battle a record-breaking heatwave, with the WHO reporting over 13,000 heat-related deaths and urging immediate implementation of heat action plans.
