Modi will be remembered as savior of Muslim women: Arif Mohammad Khan

'Muslim women had to live in constant fear of the sword of divorce'

New Delhi: Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan on Friday said the decision to abolish triple talaq is historic and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be remembered in history as the savior of Muslim women.

Khan was speaking at the launch event of the book ‘Sab Ka Saath, Sab Ka Vikas, Sab Ka Vishwas’ in the capital today. Former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur also addressed the event.

Regarding triple talaq, the governor said that this evil continued in the country for centuries. This practice was troubling, as married Muslim women had to live in constant fear of the sword of divorce. He said that getting rid of this evil is no small achievement.

In this context, he recalled an anecdote when the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had counted as his biggest failure, his inability to give Muslim women the same rights as Hindu women.

“The impact of the decision to end the practice of triple talaq will be felt years from now when political and social thinkers will analyze it and the Prime Minister will be remembered as the savior of Muslim women,” Khan said.

The Kerala Governor praised Modi for this, saying that he kept his promise braving all odds and opposition.

However, a report concluded that Triple Talaq Law has done more harm than good to Indian Muslim women.
