Shivamogga: Violence broke out in the Hindu dominated localities of Shivamogga after a Bajrang Dal member named Harsha Jingade was hacked to death by some miscreants. In the aftermath of Jingade’s murder, Muslim households are being attacked, forcing them to move from Seegehatti, Bibi Street, Clarkpet, and Azad Nagar.
As reported by the Quint, a Muslim woman on the condition of anonymity told that she woke up to the sound of stones hitting the roof of her house at 11 pm on 20 February. Fearing further rioting in the area, she and her family had moved over 10 kilometres away from their home. The woman lives in a locality, predominantly populated by Hindus.
Eight Muslim youth have been arrested so far in connection with the murder. Residents alleged that several Muslim households were attacked. As a result, many Muslim families have moved away. 14 cases of property damage and one case of assault have been registered.
Muslim residents hold the support that Karnataka Minister KS Eshwarappa responsible for giving a filip to miscreants resulting in the extension of rioting to 21 February.
