Pulmonologist Dr. Mukarram Ali Warns Ignoring a 2-Week Cough Could Lead to Tuberculosis, Lung Failure or Even Death
Hyderabad pulmonologist Dr. Mohammad Mukarram Ali warns that ignoring a cough lasting more than two weeks could lead to tuberculosis, lung failure or even death. He urges early diagnosis and warns against self-medication.

Hyderabad: A cough that continues for more than two weeks is not just a seasonal problem and should never be ignored, according to leading Hyderabad pulmonologist Dr. Mohammad Mukarram Ali. Speaking during a public health awareness programme, the chest specialist warned that delayed diagnosis is one of the biggest reasons serious lung diseases are detected too late. He said self-medication with cough syrups and antibiotics without proper medical evaluation can allow tuberculosis (TB), pneumonia, and chronic lung infections to silently worsen. The awareness message urges people to seek timely medical evaluation to prevent severe complications, including lung failure or even death.

Hyderabad Pulmonologist Explains Why a 2-Week Cough Should Never Be Ignored
During the public health awareness programme, Dr. Mohammad Mukarram Ali said that thousands of patients continue taking cough syrups and antibiotics purchased from medical stores without proper medical evaluation.
According to him, this delays diagnosis and allows serious illnesses such as tuberculosis (TB), pneumonia, and chronic lung infections to progress unnoticed.
He warned:
“Your lungs keep giving warning signs. The mistake is that most people ignore them until breathing itself becomes difficult.”
Warning Signs of Serious Lung Disease
According to Dr. Mohammad Mukarram Ali, people should immediately consult a pulmonologist if they experience any of the following symptoms:
- Cough lasting more than two weeks
- Fever that repeatedly returns, especially in the evening
- Sudden weight loss
- Persistent weakness and fatigue
- Blood in sputum
- Breathlessness during routine activities
He stressed that a simple chest X-ray and a proper clinical examination can often detect serious illness before permanent lung damage occurs.

Tuberculosis Can Affect More Than the Lungs
Dr. Ali said one of the biggest misconceptions is that tuberculosis (TB) affects only the lungs.
He explained that TB can also spread to:
- Brain
- Bones
- Eyes
- Skin
- Kidneys
- Reproductive organs
He warned that if TB is left untreated, it can cause lifelong complications, even though it is a completely treatable disease.
Self-Medication With Antibiotics Can Be Dangerous
The Hyderabad pulmonologist strongly discouraged prolonged use of antibiotics without medical advice.
According to Dr. Ali, unnecessary antibiotics often fail to cure many lung diseases and also contribute to antibiotic resistance, making future infections much harder to treat.
Don’t Wait Until Oxygen Support Is Needed
Dr. Mohammad Mukarram Ali warned that many patients seek treatment only after their illness reaches an advanced stage where oxygen support becomes necessary.
He said:
“Treatment is always easier during the early stages. Once lung damage becomes permanent, recovery becomes much more difficult.”
He urged people not to ignore persistent symptoms and to seek timely medical evaluation from a qualified pulmonologist.
The Hyderabad pulmonologist has cautioned that ignoring a cough lasting more than two weeks can delay the diagnosis of serious diseases such as tuberculosis (TB), pneumonia, and chronic lung infections, potentially leading to lung failure or even death. Dr. Mohammad Mukarram Ali advised people to avoid self-medication, watch for warning symptoms, and undergo timely medical evaluation, including a chest X-ray and clinical examination, as early diagnosis offers the best chance for successful treatment.
