RBI to Issue New ₹10 and ₹500 Notes

Design to Remain Unchanged
According to the RBI’s official statement, the design of these new banknotes will remain the same as the existing ones in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series. The only change will be the inclusion of Governor Malhotra’s signature, which confirms the authenticity of the new notes.
Old Notes to Remain Legal Tender
The RBI clarified that all existing ₹10 and ₹500 notes issued previously — including those signed by former governors — will continue to be legal tender. There will be no change in the usage or acceptance of older notes in these denominations.
Follows Earlier Announcement on ₹100 and ₹200 Notes
This development comes a month after the central bank announced plans to issue new ₹100 and ₹200 denomination notes featuring Governor Malhotra’s signature.
Governor Malhotra Took Office in December 2024
Sanjay Malhotra assumed charge as the 26th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India in December 2024, following the retirement of Shaktikanta Das, who completed his extended term in office.
