CM Revanth Reddy Seeks Full 15 TMC Water Under RDS, Raises Tungabhadra Issue at 33 Gates Inauguration in Hospet

Revanth Reddy urged Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil to ensure Telangana receives the full 15 TMC water allocation under the Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme during the inauguration of 33 new Tungabhadra Project gates near Hospet, Karnataka.

HOSPET, Karnataka: Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy requested Union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil to take necessary steps to ensure that Telangana receives and utilizes the full 15 TMC of water allocated under the Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme (RDS) for the Gadwal, Alampur, and Palamuru regions. He stated that Telangana is currently able to utilize only 5 TMC under the Tungabhadra system, while the remaining 10 TMC is not reaching the state.

The demand was raised during the grand inauguration ceremony of the newly installed 33 gates of the prestigious Tungabhadra Project near Hospet in Karnataka, held in the presence of Union Minister C.R. Patil.

Three Chief Ministers Attend Historic Tungabhadra Project Event

The inauguration ceremony witnessed the participation of Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, and Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, along with several ministers and senior officials from the three states.

Speaking at the public meeting organized on the occasion, Revanth Reddy said that out of the 15.9 TMC water allocated to Palamuru under the RDS, Telangana is able to utilize only 5 TMC.

Siltation and Water Transfer Issues Causing Loss of 10 TMC

The Chief Minister expressed concern that due to silt accumulation in the Tungabhadra reservoir and problems in water transportation, another 10 TMC of allocated water is not reaching Telangana.

He said this is causing hardship to lakhs of farmers in Gadwal and Alampur regions who depend on irrigation under the Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme.

Revanth Reddy Calls for Permanent Solution

Revanth Reddy said:

“At the invitation of D.K. Shivakumar, C.R. Patil, Chandrababu Naidu, and I, representing the three states, came together to find a permanent solution to this issue. We have gathered on the banks of the Tungabhadra River in Ballari with determination to resolve these problems permanently. Our discussions have reached a meaningful stage. We fully believe that Patil ji will provide a permanent solution to this issue.”

Water Problems Leading to Wastage of Valuable Resources

The Telangana Chief Minister stated that he had brought the issue to the attention of both C.R. Patil and Chandrababu Naidu.

According to him, irrigation water that should be used for agricultural fields is instead flowing wastefully into the sea because long-standing water issues remain unresolved.

He further said:

“I believe Patil ji will permanently resolve irrigation issues among the three states. I brought this issue to the attention of Patil ji and Chandrababu Naidu. Water that should irrigate fields is being wasted and flowing into the sea.”

Restoration of 33 Gates Expected to Solve a Three-Generation Problem

Revanth Reddy emphasized that the issue is not a recent one but a problem that has affected people for three generations.

He said the restoration and inauguration of the 33 gates would help address the concerns of lakhs of farmers in:

  • Ballari district
  • Anantapur district
  • Kurnool district
  • Palamuru district

He stated that the restoration of the gates would provide solutions to irrigation-related challenges faced by farmers in these regions.

Historic Decision Beyond Politics

The Chief Minister said discussions taking place on the banks of the Tungabhadra River transcend political considerations and could become a historic decision.

He expressed confidence that the initiative would provide a permanent solution to interstate water disputes involving the:

  • Krishna River
  • Godavari River
  • Tungabhadra River

According to Revanth Reddy, the discussions have the potential to become a landmark step in resolving water-sharing issues among states.

Tribute to Mysore Maharaja and Hyderabad Nizam

Recalling the history of the Tungabhadra Dam, Revanth Reddy said:

“The Mysore Maharaja and the Hyderabad Nizam Nawab jointly built the Tungabhadra Dam for the benefit of farmers in this region. Even rulers who fought for territories undertook great works for farmers. Inspired by that spirit, we as elected public representatives have moved forward for the welfare of farmers. We have presented all the issues of the three states before Patil ji.”

At the inauguration of the 33 newly installed gates of the Tungabhadra Project near Hospet, Karnataka, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy urged Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil to ensure that Telangana receives and utilizes the full 15 TMC water allocation under the Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme (RDS). Revanth Reddy stated that only 5 TMC is currently being utilized while 10 TMC remains unavailable due to siltation and water transfer issues. He expressed confidence that discussions among Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka would lead to a permanent solution for interstate water disputes and benefit lakhs of farmers in Gadwal, Alampur, Palamuru, Ballari, Anantapur, and Kurnool regions.
