The report assesses structural integrity and subsurface conditions of the ongoing tunnel works and will guide the completion strategy. The Minister stressed worker safety and vowed speedy completion of the project as the works continue.
NGRI Hands Over SLBC Tunnel Safety Survey Report
The report was formally handed over by H.V. S Satyanarayana, Chief Scientist of NGRI, to Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy during a review meeting held on Friday regarding project progress.
The survey focused on the structural condition and underground challenges of the SLBC tunnel works.
Advanced Geophysical Techniques Used in Survey
NGRI employed advanced geophysical techniques including:
- Seismic imaging
- Electrical resistivity tomography
These technologies helped detect anomalies that are not visible through conventional inspection methods.
Key Findings: Stress Zones, Seepage and Roof Stability
NGRI officials highlighted several important observations:
- Identification of stress zones
- Seepage patterns within the tunnel
- Stability of the tunnel roof
They also explained factors behind the roof collapse that occurred on February 22, 2025.
Minister Emphasizes Worker Safety and Scientific Planning
Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy emphasized the Telangana government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of workers. He stated that scientific inputs from NGRI would play a crucial role in making informed decisions regarding tunnel completion.
He appreciated NGRI’s work and sought its active involvement in soil investigations at:
- Medigadda barrage
- Annaram barrage
- Sundilla barrage
These are part of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, where rehabilitation works are planned.
The Minister stated that the report will be thoroughly examined and necessary measures will be initiated based on its recommendations.
Work Progress and Machinery Deployment
The Minister directed irrigation officials to fast-track works on the SLBC tunnel project by mobilizing necessary equipment and machinery from within the country, along with machinery being procured overseas.
Progress details:
- 151.50 meters of tunnel excavation achieved since work resumed
- Imported electric loaders and heavy dumpers added recently
- Target to achieve 200 meters excavation from each side per month within one month
The NGRI has submitted a detailed SLBC tunnel safety survey report to Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, highlighting structural conditions, stress zones, seepage, and the February 22, 2025 roof collapse factors. The report will guide completion strategy while ensuring worker safety. With 151.50 meters already completed, officials aim to accelerate work to 200 meters per side per month using advanced machinery.
