Telangana Launches New Basara Express via Korutla, Women’s Free Bus Travel Continues Under Mahalakshmi Scheme
Telangana Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said the Mahalakshmi Scheme for free bus travel for women is being implemented successfully as ministers launched the ₹1.62 crore Vemulawada Tippapur Bus Station modernisation and inaugurated the new Basara Express via Korutla.
The Telangana government is continuing the Mahalakshmi Scheme for free bus travel for women, Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said on Thursday while laying the foundation stone for the ₹1.62 crore modernisation of the Vemulawada Tippapur Bus Station. During the event, the ministers also flagged off a new Express bus service from Vemulawada to Basara via Korutla. The programme was attended by Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, Minister Adluri Laxman Kumar, Government Whip and Vemulawada MLA Aadi Srinivas, and several senior officials.

Ministers Lay Foundation Stone for Vemulawada Bus Station Modernisation
Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, and Minister Adluri Laxman Kumar laid the foundation stone for the modernisation of the Vemulawada Tippapur Bus Station on Thursday.
The ministers also inaugurated a new Express bus service connecting Vemulawada to Basara via Korutla, expanding RTC connectivity in the region.
Mahalakshmi Scheme Strengthens Telangana RTC
Addressing the gathering, Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said the state government fulfilled its promise by implementing free bus travel for women under the Mahalakshmi Scheme within 48 hours of assuming office.
He said the free travel scheme has significantly increased passenger numbers in Telangana RTC. To meet growing demand, the government is purchasing new buses and recruiting additional staff.
The minister said the Vemulawada Bus Station, originally constructed in 1984, is being modernised at a cost of ₹1.62 crore.
He added that Vemulawada, popularly known as Dakshina Kashi, is served by around 250 buses operating 560 trips daily.

New Basara Express and RTC Development
Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said the government has launched the new Express bus to Basara via Korutla and recalled that bus services to Mumbai had also been introduced earlier.
He stated that the RTC, which had been running in losses, has now been put on the path to profitability. The government is implementing promises made to RTC employees in a phased manner.
The minister shared the following figures:
- Around 50,000 passengers travel through the Vemulawada Bus Station every day.
- Under the Mahalakshmi Scheme, 334.11 crore women passengers have travelled free of cost so far.
- Women have collectively saved ₹11,668 crore through the scheme.
- The government has purchased 2,600 new buses.
- Around ₹100 crore is being spent on bus station development across Telangana.
- Nearly ₹1,000 crore in RTC employees’ Provident Fund (PF) dues has been cleared.
- Around ₹600 crore in CCS dues has also been paid.
Tummala Nageswara Rao Highlights Infrastructure Development
Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao said the Telangana government is modernising bus stations while improving infrastructure in major temple towns across the state.
He said Telangana RTC, one of the country’s largest public transport organisations, has successfully implemented free bus travel for women.
The minister said the government’s welfare and development programmes are reaching the people. Referring to the ongoing Varuna Pujas across the state, he advised farmers to make effective use of the recent rainfall and focus on cultivating rainfed crops.
Adluri Laxman Kumar on Vemulawada Development
Minister Adluri Laxman Kumar said that development works at the Vemulawada Sri Raja Rajeshwara Swamy Temple are progressing in line with the promise made by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy during his padayatra.
He said the foundation stone for the Vemulawada Tippapur Bus Station modernisation marks another important step in the town’s development.
Aadi Srinivas Thanks Government for ₹1.62 Crore Allocation
Government Whip and Vemulawada MLA Aadi Srinivas thanked Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on behalf of the constituency for sanctioning ₹1.62 crore for the bus station modernisation.
He said the upgraded facility would greatly benefit the lakhs of devotees visiting the Sri Raja Rajeshwara Swamy Temple as well as daily passengers.
Aadi Srinivas also said the bridge near the bus station, which had collapsed several times in the past, was completed after ensuring justice for displaced landowners.
He added that development works worth ₹249.40 crore are currently underway for the Vemulawada Sri Raja Rajeshwara Swamy Temple under the leadership of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.
