Deportation Ordeal and Document Shortcomings

The incident unfolded on August 16 across three major U.S. airports – Atlanta, San Francisco, and Chicago. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials, in a seemingly random fashion, subjected arriving students to meticulous document inspections, scrutinizing not only their physical paperwork but also delving into their mobile phones, laptops, and social media accounts. The repercussions of these checks were swift and harsh, with many students being ordered to return to their home country.

Absence of Responsive and Arbitrary Actions

Disturbingly, reports suggest that even students possessing the necessary documentation from both the embassy and their respective universities found themselves in the same unfortunate predicament. They were detained, questioned about their educational backgrounds, visa interviews, and any assistance received from external consultancies. Despite providing satisfactory answers and proof of their authenticity, these students were not spared from deportation.

Stranded at Indira Gandhi International Airport

Upon being sent back, several of these deported students found themselves stranded at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. The lack of proper documents and pending formalities further exacerbated their situation. With the deportation and subsequent travel costs draining their resources, these students faced an uncertain future, casting a shadow over their dreams of pursuing higher education in the U.S.

Interestingly, just days prior to this unfortunate incident, the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad witnessed a bustling departure scene as thousands of students who had secured admissions in various international institutions bid farewell to their homeland. This mass exodus was prompted by the commencement of academic sessions and a drive towards educational pursuits.

The surge in departures prompted authorities at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport to issue advisories regarding the number of people permitted to accompany departing passengers. This measure was not only intended to manage the influx of travelers but also to ensure security in light of the approaching Independence Day celebrations.
