Hyderabad: The Arya Vysya community in Telangana has expressed heartfelt gratitude to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and the state government for declaring Vasavi Matha Jayanthi as an official State Festival, calling the move a historic recognition of their cultural and spiritual heritage.

At a press conference held at FTCCI in Red Hills, representatives of the Arya Vysya Officials and Professionals Association (AVOPA) said the decision reflects respect for the sentiments of millions and strengthens Telangana’s cultural fabric. Leaders including Kalva Sujatha, Uppala Srinivas Gupta, Koleti Damodar, and R. Namashivaya hailed the government’s inclusive approach in honoring diverse traditions.

The community also extended thanks to Endowments Minister Konda Surekha for her role in the initiative.

Cultural Significance

Vasavi Matha Jayanthi commemorates the birth anniversary of Sri Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari, revered by the Arya Vysya community across India. Celebrated on Vaisakha Shukla Paksha Dashami (April–May), the festival symbolizes values of non-violence (Ahimsa), righteousness (Dharma), and self-sacrifice.

A major celebration is scheduled at Ravindra Bharathi on April 26, expected to be attended by the Chief Minister, ministers, and senior officials.

Demand for ‘Self Sacrifice Day’

Community leaders urged the Telangana government to also officially declare ‘Self Sacrifice Day (Aathmarpana Dinotsavam)’, similar to Andhra Pradesh, which has already recognized both occasions for official observance.

They noted that Telangana is now the second state in India to accord official status to Vasavi Matha Jayanthi and expressed hope that further recognition would follow.

Community Contributions

Speakers highlighted the significant contributions of the Vysya community to India’s economy and society, particularly in trade, commerce, and entrepreneurship. They also pointed to their role in the freedom movement, citing leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Potti Sreeramulu.

With over 20 lakh Vysyas in Telangana, AVOPA reaffirmed its commitment to promoting cultural values, social harmony, and community service inspired by the teachings of Vasavi Matha.

The recognition of Vasavi Matha Jayanthi as a State Festival is being seen as a milestone that not only honors tradition but also reinforces the ideals of peace, unity, and ethical living in society.
