Reluctance to timely vaccination leading to high child mortality: Experts

Medical experts have raised concern that reluctance and delays in timely vaccination are contributing to preventable child mortality, stressing the urgent need to strengthen immunization coverage across all sections of society.

Hyderabad: Medical experts have raised concern that reluctance and delays in timely vaccination are contributing to preventable child mortality, stressing the urgent need to strengthen immunization coverage across all sections of society.

Marking World Immunization Week 2026 (April 24–30), doctors at M’Brace by Kamineni Hospitals launched an awareness initiative underscoring the critical role of vaccines in safeguarding public health. This year’s global theme, “For every generation, vaccines work,” highlights the importance of immunization for people of all age groups.

India operates one of the world’s largest vaccination programmes under the Universal Immunization Programme, covering nearly 29 million pregnant women and 26.5 million infants each year. Experts noted that vaccines not only protect individuals but also help build community immunity, reducing the spread of infectious diseases.

According to specialists, vaccines provide long-term protection against serious illnesses such as polio, measles, rubella, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, hepatitis B, rotavirus infection, pneumococcal disease, and HPV-related cancers. However, gaps in awareness, accessibility, and vaccine hesitancy continue to hinder progress.

Dr. S. Narasimha Rao, Senior Consultant Paediatrician at M’Brace, said immunization has dramatically transformed child healthcare, making many once-deadly diseases preventable. “Incomplete vaccination and lack of awareness remain key concerns. Following the recommended immunization schedule is essential for full protection,” he said.

Dr. Kanchan S. Channawar, Consultant Pediatrician and Pediatric Intensivist, highlighted that many severe infections seen in critical care are preventable through vaccines. “Immunization reduces disease severity, hospital admissions, and the need for intensive care. Addressing vaccine hesitancy through awareness and counselling is crucial,” she noted.

Dr. R. V. Soujanya, Consultant Paediatrician and Neonatologist, emphasized that immunization begins at birth and is vital during the most vulnerable stages of life. She pointed out that maternal vaccination and early childhood immunization significantly improve survival rates and long-term health outcomes.

Experts collectively stressed that ensuring equitable access to vaccines and improving public awareness are key to building a disease-free future. They urged parents and caregivers to prioritize timely vaccination and adhere strictly to immunization schedules to protect children and communities alike.
