Early Detection Saves Lives: Incidentally Detected Kidney Tumor Successfully Treated

Hyderabad: In a compelling case highlighting the life-saving potential of routine health screenings, a 42-year-old man in Hyderabad was successfully treated for kidney cancer after a tumor was incidentally detected during a routine medical check-up.
The patient, who had no prior history of diabetes, hypertension, smoking, or family history of cancer, underwent a standard master health check-up. An abdominal ultrasound unexpectedly revealed an 8 cm mass in his left kidney, despite the absence of any symptoms.
Subsequent evaluation through a contrast-enhanced CT scan confirmed the presence of a renal tumor. Doctors proceeded with a radical nephrectomy — surgical removal of the affected kidney. Histopathological analysis later confirmed the diagnosis as clear cell renal cell carcinoma, the most common form of kidney cancer. The patient has since recovered well and is currently stable.
Speaking on the condition, Dr. Srinivasa Narayanam, Head of Urology and Senior Consultant Urologist at Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology, emphasized that kidney cancer accounts for approximately 2–3% of all adult cancers globally. He noted that around 70–80% of kidney tumors are discovered incidentally, as early stages of the disease often present no symptoms.
“Early detection is crucial. When identified at an early stage, kidney cancer is highly treatable, and patients can go on to live normal lives,” he said.
Medical experts highlight that risk factors for kidney cancer include smoking, obesity, hypertension, and certain genetic conditions such as Von Hippel–Lindau disease. However, as demonstrated in this case, the disease can also occur in individuals without any identifiable risk factors.

Doctors further explained that while smaller tumors can often be treated with kidney-sparing procedures, larger tumors may require complete removal of the kidney. In advanced stages, treatments such as immunotherapy have shown promising results in controlling the disease.
According to experts, survival rates are significantly higher when the tumor is detected early, with five-year survival rates ranging between 70–90% for smaller tumors.
The case underscores the importance of regular health check-ups, particularly imaging tests like abdominal ultrasounds, even for individuals who appear healthy. Physicians advise seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms such as blood in urine, persistent back pain, or unexplained weight loss occur.
The Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology, a leading super-specialty network in India, reiterated its commitment to raising awareness about kidney health and the importance of early diagnosis in improving patient outcomes.
