Woman Delivers Baby Mid-Air, Kochi-London Flight Diverted to Frankfurt

New Delhi: A pregnant woman en route Kochi from London welcomed her baby boy mid air even as the Air India crew members took a quick decision to divert the flight to Frankfurt to drop off the new mother and the infant to ensure they get immediate medical attention.

For the 33-year old woman, of course, the delivery came out of blue as she was not expecting the baby before December 20. An Air India official wishing not to be named said that the baby was born on October 5.

As per Air India policy, passengers upto 32 weeks pregnancy can travel without a doctor’s fit to fly certificate. Between 32-35 weeks, approval by doctor is mandatory for pregnant passengers to fly. In this case the woman who was around 29-weeks pregnant had shown a certificate by her doctor at check-in counter and was declared fit to travel by air.

“For us passenger convenience and their well-being rank above all monetary factors. We are glad that the mother and new-born baby are safe,” said the official quoted above.
