Hyderabad: The rape and murder of a six-year-old girl in the Singareni Colony of Hyderabad’s Saeedabad region sparked outrage and fierce protests on Friday.
The body of the girl, who had been missing since 5 p.m. on Thursday, was discovered in a nearby residence after midnight. Prior to her murder, she was suspected of having been sexually assaulted.
Residents mounted a demonstration when the police arrived, asking that the accused be handed over to them. They attempted to prevent the body from being moved for an autopsy until the accused was handed up to them. Some protestors pelted stones and chilli powder at police officers.
The incident heightened tensions, prompting the deployment of more force to preserve law and order.
Raju, the man whose residence the girl’s body was discovered, was stated to be on the run and that all efforts were being made to apprehend him.
Residents of Singareni Colony protested on Champapet-Sagar Road on Friday, seeking the heaviest penalty for the perpetrators and justice for the victim. L. Sharman, the Hyderabad District Collector, attempted to appease the protestors by announcing immediate financial aid of Rs 50,000 to the victim’s family.
The victim’s family had relocated from the Nalgonda district in search of work. Her father is works as an auto-rickshaw driver. (IANS)
