AIMIM Emerges as Major Force in Maharashtra Civic Polls, Wins 95 Seats Across State

AIMIM emerges as a major force in Maharashtra civic polls 2026, winning 95 seats across 13 municipal bodies and expanding its footprint beyond traditional strongholds.

In a major political development, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has emerged as a significant force in Maharashtra’s civic politics by securing 95 seats across 13 Municipal Corporations in the 2026 local body elections. This marks AIMIM’s strongest-ever performance in Maharashtra’s urban local governance.

The results indicate a clear expansion of the party’s footprint beyond its traditional strongholds, reshaping the political landscape of several cities.

AIMIM Records Strongest Civic Performance in Maharashtra

Led nationally by Asaduddin Owaisi, AIMIM’s performance reflects growing support among urban voters, particularly in minority-dominated areas. Political observers say the party’s success is rooted in grassroots campaigning and focus on local civic issues.

With these results, AIMIM has emerged as a serious challenger to established parties, including Congress, NCP factions, and the Samajwadi Party in several regions.

Strong Gains in Key Cities and Regions

AIMIM made notable inroads across multiple urban centres, including:

  • Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, where the party secured its highest number of corporators, defeating Shiv Sena factions
  • Mumbai, where AIMIM improved its tally compared to 2017 and gained seats in minority-dominated wards
  • Thane, picking up key seats in the Municipal Corporation
  • Solapur and Dhule, where the party registered significant gains

Analysts say AIMIM has consolidated its vote share particularly in Marathwada and parts of Western Maharashtra.

Improved Performance in Mumbai Civic Body

In Mumbai, AIMIM has improved on its 2017 performance, when it had won only two seats. The party is now expected to play a vocal role in the opposition benches of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), raising civic and minority-related issues.

AIMIM leader Khairunisa Akbar Husain, who won from Ward No. 145, said the victory belonged to the people and reiterated the party’s commitment to addressing local civic problems.

AIMIM Emerges as Kingmaker in Several Councils

With 95 seats, AIMIM has positioned itself as a potential kingmaker in several smaller municipal bodies where no single alliance has secured a clear majority. The results could play a key role in post-poll alignments at the local level.

The party had earlier attracted attention after briefly supporting the BJP in the Akot Municipal Council, though that association later collapsed following political backlash.

Momentum Ahead of Future Elections

AIMIM had already shown strong momentum in Nagar Parishad and Nagar Panchayat elections held last year, where it won 83 seats and secured a president’s post in one council. Party leaders say the consistent gains reflect public support for development-focused politics, justice, and representation.

The party has described the Maharashtra civic poll outcome as a victory for grassroots struggles and sustained local engagement, rather than short-term campaigning.

Changing Dynamics of Maharashtra Politics

Political analysts believe AIMIM’s growing presence will influence future electoral strategies, especially ahead of the 2029 Maharashtra Assembly elections. The results suggest a gradual shift in urban voter preferences and a demand for stronger local representation.
