Why Fuel Demand Suddenly Increased
Officials identified three major reasons behind the sudden spike in demand:
- Industrial diesel price revised to ₹150 per litre, leading bulk buyers to purchase fuel from public pumps where price is capped at ₹95 per litre
- Supply issues in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, causing cross-border buyers to rush to districts like Khammam and Nirmal
- False rumours of post-election price hikes, triggering panic buying and hoarding by the public
Emergency Measures by Civil Supplies Department
To manage the situation, Civil Supplies Commissioner M Stephen Raveendra issued emergency orders:
- Directed Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to increase supply
- Deployed 3,100 fuel tankers across the state
- Introduced advance indents from dealers to speed up supply
Strict Monitoring and Farmer Protection
The department has strengthened monitoring by:
- Collecting stock reports every 3 hours from retail outlets
- Conducting daily teleconferences to review supply
- Ensuring uninterrupted fuel access for farmers
