Tension spread in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district after a mob allegedly consisting of BJP supporters vandalised a statue of Russian revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin in the Jiyaganj area late Tuesday night.

According to reports, the Election Commission has directed authorities to take strict action against individuals involved in violence and provocation, while preparations are also underway for the swearing-in ceremony of the new government scheduled for May 9.
CPI(M) Accuses BJP Workers of Attack on Lenin Statue
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) strongly reacted to the incident and alleged on social media platform X that BJP “goons” attacked and vandalised the Lenin statue in Jiyaganj on the night of May 5.
According to CPI(M), party workers immediately lodged a police complaint and staged a protest demonstration against the incident.
Following the complaint and protests, police arrested five persons in connection with the vandalism case.
Lenin Statue to Be Reinstalled on May 8
CPI(M) further stated that its workers returned to the spot again on Wednesday morning and announced that the Lenin statue would be reinstalled on May 8.
The party alleged that BJP supporters were responsible for the vandalism and linked the incident to the ongoing political tensions in the state after the elections.
Police Say Situation in Murshidabad Is Under Control
According to local police officials, the situation in the area remains tense but is fully under control.
A senior police officer confirmed that five individuals had been taken into custody on charges related to the vandalism and destruction of the Lenin statue in Jiyaganj.
Police continue to monitor the area amid concerns over post-election tensions and political clashes.
Mahua Moitra Condemns Incident
Mahua Moitra also condemned the incident through an Instagram post.
She wrote:
“Yesterday in Jiyaganj, BJP workers pulled down a decades-old Lenin statue and claimed that a Shivaji statue would be installed in its place. Enjoy this ‘change’.”
