The Telangana Government has declared a public holiday for Muharram, bringing clarity to the confusion surrounding the date of the holiday. The holiday announcement comes shortly after schools reopened following the summer vacation.

  • Private colleges

across Telangana will remain closed on June 26, 2026 (Friday) in observance of Muharram.

The closure applies after the reopening of educational institutions following the summer holidays.

Muharram Holiday Date Clarified

The uncertainty regarding the Muharram holiday arose due to differences in moon sighting between Gulf countries and India.

According to the Islamic calendar, the 1448 Hijri New Year has begun.

  • Muharram began on June 16 in Gulf countries.
  • In India, the crescent moon was sighted on June 17.

As a result, there was a one-day difference in the observance of Ashura between Gulf countries and India.

Why the Muharram Holiday Falls on June 26 in Telangana

The Central Government clarified the date of Ashura in India.

This year:

  • Ashura is being observed on June 25 (Thursday) in Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
  • Ashura is being observed on June 26 (Friday) in India because the moon was sighted a day later.

Due to this difference, the public holiday has been scheduled for June 26.

Students to Get Three Consecutive Holidays

The June 26 holiday creates a long weekend for students and educational staff.

The holiday schedule includes:

  • Friday, June 26 – Muharram Holiday
  • Saturday – Weekend Holiday
  • Sunday – Weekend Holiday

As a result, students in Telangana schools and colleges will enjoy three consecutive holidays.

Significance of Muharram

Muharram is one of the most important occasions in the Islamic calendar.

According to Islamic tradition:

  • Sunni Muslims observe fasting on Ashura to commemorate God’s protection of Prophet Moses from the Egyptian king Pharaoh.
  • Shia Muslims observe Ashura as a day of mourning.

The festival is observed across various parts of India, and its date is determined according to the lunar calendar.

Educational Institutions to Reopen After Weekend

Schools and colleges across Telangana are expected to resume regular classes after the weekend break.

Students and parents are advised to stay in touch with their respective educational institutions for any local scheduling updates or specific instructions.

All government and private schools and colleges across Telangana will remain closed on June 26, 2026, on the occasion of Muharram. The holiday follows the clarification regarding Ashura observance in India and comes soon after educational institutions reopened after summer vacation. With the Friday holiday followed by Saturday and Sunday, students and staff will receive a three-day weekend before classes resume.
