HYDRAA Lake Rejuvenation Drive: 6 Lakes Restored, Work Begins on 20 More to Control Floods in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has intensified its lake rejuvenation mission to reduce urban flooding in Hyderabad by restoring the city’s chain of interconnected lakes. According to the official statement, HYDRAA has already restored 6 lakes during the first phase and has initiated work on 20 more lakes, including 14 lakes under the second phase and 4 major lakes planned as mini–Tank Bunds across the city.

The agency said the restoration drive has also recovered 75 acres of land during the first phase and 168 acres in the second phase by removing encroachments. The lake restoration work is currently ongoing.
HYDRAA Focuses on Chain of Lakes to Reduce Urban Flooding
According to the official note, HYDRAA believes that controlling floods in Hyderabad is possible only by restoring the city’s interconnected chain of lakes.
Since its formation, the agency has been working to rejuvenate lakes to improve flood management. During its first two years, HYDRAA completed restoration of 6 lakes and has now moved ahead with restoring 20 more lakes. The statement said the lakes developed by HYDRAA demonstrate how lake restoration should be carried out.
During the restoration of the first six lakes, removal of encroachments made 75 acres of additional land available.
Similarly, during the second phase, HYDRAA has reclaimed 168 acres of additional land by clearing encroachments from 14 lakes.

First Phase: 6 Lakes Restored by HYDRAA
According to the official statement, the following six lakes were restored during the first phase:
- Bathukamma Kunta – Amberpet
- Nalla Cheruvu – Kukatpally
- Bam Rukn-ud-Daula Lake – Old City
- Thammidikunta – Madhapur
- Sunnam Cheruvu – Madhapur
- Nalla Cheruvu – Uppal
Second Phase: HYDRAA Takes Up Restoration of 14 Lakes
HYDRAA said restoration work is underway at the following 14 lakes:
- Thoutanikunta – Khajaguda
- Bhagirathamma Cheruvu – Puppalaguda
- Eerla Cheruvu – Madinaguda
- Errakunta Cheruvu – Bachupally
- Pedda Cheruvu – Ramanthapur
- Kapra Cheruvu – Sahebnagar
- Nallagandla Cheruvu – Nallagandla
- Pedda Cheruvu – Gangaram
- Kamuni Cheruvu – Moosapet
- Rangadhamuni Kunta – Kukatpally
- Ibrahim Cheruvu – Ibrahimbagh
- Pedda Cheruvu – Nacharam
- Krishnakant N Park – Jubilee Hills
- Turka Cheruvu – Nizampet
According to the agency, encroachments are being removed as part of the restoration work, resulting in the recovery of 168 acres of land.
HYDRAA Developing Four Mini Tank Bunds Across Hyderabad
The official statement said the Telangana government has also planned to develop mini Tank Bunds in different parts of Hyderabad.
As part of this initiative, HYDRAA is developing the following four major lakes:
- Ambeer Cheruvu (Pragathi Nagar Cheruvu) – Pragathi Nagar
- Fox Sagar Lake – Jeedimetla
- Ameenpur Pedda Cheruvu – Ameenpur
- Saroornagar Pedda Cheruvu – Saroornagar
The government said these projects are aimed at strengthening flood management while improving lake infrastructure across the city.
HYDRAA Says Lake Rejuvenation Is Key to Flood Prevention
According to the official note, HYDRAA considers lake rejuvenation the most effective solution for preventing urban flooding in Hyderabad. The agency stated that restoring interconnected lakes, removing encroachments, and developing major lakes as mini Tank Bunds will improve water flow and strengthen the city’s flood management system.
The lake restoration programme remains ongoing, with additional projects continuing under the second phase.
