New Delhi: In a significant development today, the nationwide truckers’ protest appears to have made headway as the government pledges to hold off implementing a controversial law related to hit-and-run cases.
The All-India Motor Transport Congress engaged in extensive discussions with government officials, leading to an appeal for a temporary suspension of the ongoing truckers’ agitation.
Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, in a statement this evening, announced, “We had a discussion with All India Motor Transport Congress representatives… the government wants to say that the new rule has not been implemented yet. We all want to say that before implementing Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita 106/2, we will have a discussion with All India Motor Transport Congress representatives and then only we will take a decision.”
President of All India Motor Transport Congress, Amrit Lal Madan, revealed on Tuesday that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has decided to put on hold the proposed punishment of 10 years and fines in hit-and-run cases under the new Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).
Madan stated during a press conference, “Union Home Minister Amit Shah has put the ten years of punishment and fine that was imposed, on hold. Until the next meeting of the All India Motor Transport Congress is held, no laws will be imposed.”
The Ministry of Home Affairs emphasized during the Tuesday meeting that the new laws have not been implemented yet. They assured truckers’ representatives that if there are concerns, the government is willing to consider them with an “open heart.”
The development brings a temporary respite to the truckers’ agitation, paving the way for further discussions between stakeholders and the government on the contentious issue.
