Praises pour in for 22-year-old engineering student Bushra Mateen who became the first student of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) to win 16 gold medals. What is more surprising about her is she wears hijab and the hijab didn’t come in the way of her achievements. Bushra did civil engineering from SLN College of Engineering, Raichur.
Daughter of Mr Zaheeruddin, Bushra completed her schooling from St Mary’s convent and PU from Pramana PU College in Raichur.
Bushra says hijab has never come in the way of her studies. She adds that Hijab is her choice and fundamental and constitutional right.
When the golden girl went up the dias to receive her medals she received rousing reception from the gathering which included Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot and Higher Education Minister C N Ashwath Narayan. She received a bunch of medals from the dignitaries.
She bagged Shri SG Balekundri gold medal, Dr Smt Malti Kesari gold medal, Murty’s medal of excellence, N Krishna murty memorial gold medal, JNU University gold medal, Jyoti gold medal, Jagatguru Chaitanya memorial gold medal, among others. She also secured first rank and scored highest marks with first class in civil engineering. She secured highest aggregate marks in all 8 semesters. She got the highest marks and stood first in BE Civil engineering.
Apart from the medals she won two cash prizes.
