Hakikunnisa became the first Muslim BJP corporator of Gorakhpur Nagar Nigam from ward-5, Baba Gambhirnath Nagar.
Defeating independent candidate Shaheen with a margin of 647 votes, Hakikunnisa won the urban local body (ULB) elections with 2,227 votes.
BJP had given ticket to Hakikunnisa, the only Muslim in the city.
After winning the election, Hakikunnisa met Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Gorakhnath temple on Sunday evening and took his blessings by touching his feet.
Hakikun (42) is the wife of Manbela Kisan leader Barkat Ali, who is known to be close to CM Yogi. She is a graduate.
TOI has quoted Barkat Ali as saying, “My whole family has been in BJP since 2012 and we only support BJP as a party. CM Yogi is the best chief minister I have ever seen and I respect him a lot. My wife always helps me with my work. We have three children, including a daughter and all of them are studying.”
“I believe in CM Yogi and his policies and I will work hard for my ward. We are Pasmanda Muslims and I am happy that BJP believed in me,” Hakikunnisa is quoted to have said.
