Hindu lawyer of pro-hijab petitioners faces hate campaign; backed by Ashram

Kamat is in spotlight for representing pro-hijab petitions in Karnataka High Court.

Hyderabad: Advocate Devadutt Kamat, the lawyer of pro-hijab petitioners is facing an online hate campaign for representing Muslim girls in the hijab case in Karnataka High Court.

Accusing Kamat of attempting to legitimize a website which spreads hate against Hindus, social media users alleged that Kamat is playing a “dangerous game” by supporting the girls.

It must be recalled that Kamat had quoted from the website during his arguments in the Court.

While Kamat is facing online hate campaign, he has been supported by Ramakrishna Ashram on Saturday. Defending the senior SC advocate Devadutt Kamat for representing the petitioners, the Ashram Mahant stated:  “Some elements are trying to brand him as supporting a cause against Hindu religion. This perception is absolutely uncalled for and baseless. A lawyer representing a client in court has to do his duty and justice to his client’s cause. That is a professional duty and responsibility.”

Confirming that Devadatta Kamat is a devotee of the Ramakrishna Ashram since his childhood, the Mahant requested the people to discourage any such attempts on the part of those who indulge in such unjustified and orchestrated baseless propaganda that is being perpetrated by some “unscrupulous elements”.

Kamat is in spotlight for representing pro-hijab petitions in Karnataka High Court, where he made noteworthy arguments invoking the right to privacy and freedom of expression, besides offering a way to deal with the situation.

He made the point that wearing of head scarf is an essential part of Islamic religion and it protected by right to expression under Article 19(1)(a) and can be restricted only on grounds under Article 19(6). He further added that wearing hijab is a facet of the right to privacy recognized as part of Article 21 by Puttaswamy judgment of Supreme Court.
