HYDRAA Launches Ramanthapur Lake Restoration; AV Ranganath Starts Works to Reclaim Encroached Land and Reduce Flood Risk
HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath launched Ramanthapur Lake restoration works in Uppal constituency. More than 18 acres were reclaimed, nearly Rs 19 crore will be spent, and 36 families received Double Bedroom Houses.

Hyderabad: Continuing its efforts towards flood control and environmental protection, HYDRAA has launched the restoration of Ramanthapur Pedda Cheruvu in the Uppal constituency. HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath formally inaugurated the restoration works on Thursday by performing Bhoomi Puja.

The Ramanthapur Lake restoration project is part of HYDRAA’s second phase of lake rejuvenation works. The agency has already completed restoration of 6 lakes in the first phase and is currently restoring 14 more lakes in the second phase. The restoration work is underway.
Ramanthapur Lake Spread Over 30 Acres, 16 Acres Encroached
Officials stated that the FTL (Full Tank Level) area of Ramanthapur Pedda Cheruvu is 30 acres.
According to HYDRAA:
- Nearly 16 acres of the lake area had been encroached upon.
- Permanent structures had come up on 12 acres.
- HYDRAA did not disturb the permanent structures.
- Temporary sheds and huts existed on another 4 acres.
After clearing the temporary structures, HYDRAA made more than 18 acres of land available for the restoration and expansion of the lake.
HYDRAA to Spend Nearly Rs 19 Crore on Lake Restoration
Officials said that nearly Rs 19 crore will be spent on the restoration and development of the lake.
According to HYDRAA, once the lake is fully developed:
- Flood threats in the area are expected to reduce.
- Groundwater levels are expected to improve.
- The lake will help maintain environmental balance in surrounding areas.
The agency stated that protecting and restoring lakes is essential not only for preserving water resources but also for securing the future of the city.
Double Bedroom Houses Provided to Hut Dwellers
HYDRAA stated that families living in huts near the lake faced difficulties every year when the lake filled up during the monsoon season, as their huts were vulnerable to flooding.
Many residents earned their livelihood through:
- Waste collection
- Daily wage labour
Officials brought their situation to the notice of the government and facilitated the sanction of Double Bedroom Houses for them.
HYDRAA directly interacted with residents living in the huts and informed them about the government’s decision to allot Double Bedroom Houses.
As a result, residents voluntarily cooperated with the lake restoration and expansion project.
36 Families Shifted to Double Bedroom Houses
According to officials:
- Around 36 families were provided Double Bedroom Houses.
- The initiative was taken to improve their living standards.
- The families voluntarily supported the restoration project after receiving housing assistance.
HYDRAA stated that lake conservation is not merely about protecting water bodies but also about creating a sustainable future for Hyderabad.

The Ramanthapur Lake restoration is part of HYDRAA’s ongoing second phase of lake rejuvenation works.

HYDRAA has commenced restoration works at Ramanthapur Pedda Cheruvu in Uppal constituency, with Commissioner A.V. Ranganath performing Bhoomi Puja and launching the project on Thursday. The lake, which has an FTL area of 30 acres, had witnessed encroachment on 16 acres, including 12 acres of permanent structures and 4 acres of temporary huts and sheds. HYDRAA reclaimed more than 18 acres for restoration and plans to spend nearly Rs 19 crore on the project. The agency has also provided Double Bedroom Houses to around 36 families, while restoration works continue as part of the second phase of lake rejuvenation.
