Indian Railways Introduces Ticket Transfer Service: A Solution for Last-Minute Travel Changes

Indian Railway passengers occasionally face situations where they can’t use their confirmed ticket due to unforeseen emergencies or last-minute changes in plans. To prevent the ticket from going to waste, Indian Railways now allows passengers to transfer it to a family member in need. However, this service is limited to family members only.

Here’s how to make use of this facility:

1. The passenger, including government employees, must request the transfer 24 hours prior to the train’s departure time through the IRCTC portal.

2. For government employees with special occasions or personal matters, like festivals or weddings, the request must be made 48 hours in advance.

In addition to government employees, NCC candidates can also benefit from this service. The person taking the ticket must carry a valid government ID for verification during travel.

To transfer a confirmed train ticket, follow these steps:

1. Obtain a printout of the ticket.

2. Visit the nearest railway station and head to the reservation counter.

3. Make sure to have a valid ID proof (like Aadhar card, PAN card, or Voter’s ID) of the person to whom you want to transfer the ticket.

4. Submit a copy of your own ID proof.

5. Apply for ticket transfer over the counter with all the necessary documents.

6. Your ticket will be successfully transferred to the person who will be traveling in your place.

The Ministry of Railways has emphasized that when a confirmed ticket is cancelled, the vacant spot is promptly allocated to the first person on the waiting list, ensuring swift confirmation. Confirmed passengers will be notified through a message sent by Indian Railways.
