Kerala Guv Arif Khan issues anti-hijab remark

Arif Mohammad Khan went on to say that Islam harbours the mentality "to keep women suppressed"

Hyderabad: Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan gave a controversial remark on Muslim hijab saying that hijab is not intrinsic to the practice of Islam as turban is essential to Sikh religion.

In an exclusive interview with India Today Kerala Governor said, “In Sikhism, the turban is considered and accepted as essential to the religion. On the other hand, hijab in the context of women’s dress finds no mention in the Quran.”

Arif Mohammad Khan alleged that “vested interests” were using young Muslim women to protest for their right to wear hijab. He advised students not to be instigated by outsiders and focus on your studies.

Kerala Governor opined that if the argument of those protesting for the right to wear hijab is accepted, it is Muslim women who will be “the losers”.

According to India Today, Arif Mohammad Khan went on to say that Islam harbours the mentality “to keep women suppressed”.

The hijab row erupted in Karnataka after a group of hijab-wearing Muslim students were not allowed to enter their college in Udupi. Following this, more colleges and schools issued similar diktats resulting in protests both for and against the right to wear hijabs in educational institutions.

The protests have now spread to other states and the matter is presently in the high court.
