Monsoon Season: Experts Advise Caution Over Outdoor Food

Hyderabad: Health experts have urged people to exercise extra caution while eating outside during the monsoon season, warning that the risk of stomach and intestinal infections increases significantly due to contaminated food and water.
Doctors say hospitals often witness a rise in cases of diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach pain, and food poisoning during the rainy season. The increased moisture and humidity create ideal conditions for bacteria, viruses, and other harmful microorganisms to multiply rapidly, making food and water more susceptible to contamination.
Children, senior citizens, and individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to such infections, health experts noted.
Medical professionals advised the public to avoid consuming food that has been left uncovered, pre-cut fruits, or meals prepared in unhygienic conditions. Freshly cooked, hot food is considered the safest option during the monsoon.
Experts also recommended drinking only boiled, filtered, or purified water, especially in areas affected by flooding or waterlogging, where water sources may become contaminated.

Maintaining proper hand hygiene is another key preventive measure. Doctors advised washing hands thoroughly with soap before eating, after using the restroom, and after returning home from outside to reduce the risk of infection.
People have also been encouraged to wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before consumption and, where possible, peel fruits before eating them. Perishable food items such as milk, meat, and dairy products should be refrigerated promptly to prevent bacterial growth.
Health specialists further recommended maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, proteins, and probiotics to support gut health and strengthen the immune system.
In case of diarrhoea or vomiting, doctors advised increasing fluid intake to prevent dehydration and seeking medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen.
Experts emphasized that avoiding street food and unhygienic outdoor meals during the monsoon remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses and gastrointestinal infections.
