Mukhtar Ansari sentenced to 7 years imprisonment

Lucknow: Dismissing the decision of the lower court, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on Wednesday sentenced MLA Mukhtar Ansari to 7 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 37,000 for threatening a jailer and pointing a pistol at him.

Hearing a plea of the Uttar Pradesh government, a single-judge bench of Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh passed the order.

The then jailer SK Awasthi had lodged an FIR against Mukhtar Ansari at the Alambagh police station in 2003 alleging that he was threatened by Ansari when he checked the people who came to meet him in the jail. He had also said that Ansari pointed a gun at him.

Citing lack of evidence, a trial court had released Mukhtar Ansari in the case but the UP government had appealed in the high court against the trial court order.
