SGPC Chief Harjinder Singh Dhami Opposes Uniform Civil Code, Citing Threats to Traditions and Minorities’ Identity
Harjinder Singh Dhami, the chief of Sikh body SGPC, expressed his opposition to the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). He raised concerns about the potential erosion of traditions, culture, and the unique identity of minority communities.
Dhami’s remarks followed a statement by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) that the nationwide implementation of the UCC would adversely affect minority and tribal groups.
Addressing the media, Chief Dhami stated that the SGPC, a prominent body overseeing Sikh shrines, firmly stands against the UCC and opposes its enforcement. He also criticized the Punjab government’s interference in religious matters, particularly the Sikh Gurdwaras (Amendment) Bill, 2023, stating that it directly violated the rights of Sikhs.
Dhami revealed that the SGPC plans to meet with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the Sikh Gurdwaras (Amendment) Bill, 2023.
On June 20, the Punjab Assembly passed the Sikh Gurdwaras (Amendment) Bill, 2023, aimed at ensuring the free telecast of Gurbani (Sikh hymns) from the Golden Temple.
The SGPC has been opposing this bill, arguing that amendments to the Sikh Gurdwaras Act, 1925 can only be made by Parliament.
When asked about the broadcasting of ‘Gurbani’ from the Golden Temple, Chief Dhami emphasized that it was not solely about a specific channel but rather the state government’s undue interference in Sikh religious matters. He reassured the public of the SGPC’s commitment to protecting the rights and heritage of the Sikh community, stating that they would not allow any amendments to the Sikh Gurdwaras Act of 1925.
Regarding the possibility of launching a YouTube channel for broadcasting ‘gurbani kirtan’ (devotional hymns), Chief Dhami mentioned that a sub-committee was currently looking into it.
Chief Dhami also expressed the SGPC’s concerns about the safety and security of Sikhs living in Pakistan, urging the government to take proactive measures to protect their well-being.
Harjinder Singh Dhami attended a religious procession called ‘Nagar Kirtan’ held at Gurdwara Bahadurgarh Sahib.
