Authorities have warned of an OTP scam in the name of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Electoral Rolls. Fraudsters posing as election officials are allegedly targeting bank accounts through fake voter verification calls.

Hyderabad: A new cyber fraud has surfaced in the name of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Electoral Rolls, with scammers allegedly posing as Election Office officials, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and other election staff to steal money from people’s bank accounts. Victims are reportedly asked to share a One-Time Password (OTP) on the pretext of verifying their names in the 2002 voters’ list. Authorities have warned the public never to disclose OTPs and to immediately report such calls to the police.

Fraudsters Allegedly Using SIR Verification as a Trap

According to the press note, scammers are making phone calls claiming to be:

  • Election Office officials
  • Booth Level Officers (BLOs)
  • Other election staff

The callers allegedly tell people that they need to verify whether their names are present in the 2002 voters’ list as part of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Electoral Rolls.

Scammers Ask for OTP to Steal Money

During the call, the fraudsters allegedly ask the recipient to share the OTP received on their mobile phone.

The press note warns that once the OTP is shared, the money in the victim’s bank account may be siphoned off.

Authorities have urged the public not to share OTPs with anyone under any circumstances.

No Election Official Will Ask for an OTP

The advisory clearly states that:

  • No official will ask you to reveal your OTP.
  • If any caller threatens or pressures you to disclose the OTP, you should immediately complain to the police.

The warning emphasizes that genuine election officials do not seek OTPs for voter verification.

Public Advisory

Authorities have appealed to citizens to remain alert and avoid falling victim to the scam.

The advisory highlights the following safety measures:

  • Never share your OTP with anyone.
  • Verify the identity of unknown callers.
  • Report suspicious calls to the police immediately.
  • Stay cautious of calls claiming to verify voter details through OTP.

With the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Electoral Rolls underway, authorities have warned the public about a new OTP scam in which fraudsters allegedly impersonate Election Office officials and BLOs to verify names in the 2002 voters’ list. Citizens have been advised never to share OTPs, as doing so could result in money being stolen from their bank accounts. Any suspicious calls should be reported to the police immediately.
