Students in Aligarh attend classes wearing saffron shawls
Students wear saffron shawls in protest against hijab
Aligarh: Even as the Muslim girl students in Karnataka are not allowed to attend classes in Hijab, some students of Aligarh’s Dharam Samaj College attended the classes wearing saffron shawls.
According to ABVP, it was in response to those institutions who support students wearing hijabs in classrooms. Submitting a memorandum to the college proctor, the students said if Muslim girls would attend classes in hijab, they would sport saffron shawls. The Hindu quoted Amit Goswami, senior student leader and vice-president of the city unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha as saying, “We demand that the dress code be followed in all educational institutions.”
A twitter user shared the video stating: “Muslim students wearing #Hijab are not being allowed to sit in class wearing #Hijab. But no one stopped the saffron students with the saffron shawl.”
Another user shared the video on twitter.
Alleging that Muslims were trying to vitiate the atmosphere, Local Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad leader Seetu Chaudhary said that the protest was symbolic and to make Muslims understand that if they insist on carrying their religious symbols to classrooms, others could do so as well.
Earlier the students of the Aligarh Muslim University had organised a protest in support of the women students who were not allowed to attend classes in hijab in a college in Udupi in Karnataka.
