Telangana Crops Suffer Extensive Damage Due to Unseasonal Rains

Agriculture Minister Orders Damage Assessment

In response to the damage, Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao has instructed officials to visit affected fields and submit detailed reports on the losses incurred due to the unseasonal weather. He also directed the marketing department to ensure that the produce brought by farmers to market yards is safeguarded.

Officials were further instructed to shift procured stocks to warehouses immediately to prevent further damage.

Thunderstorms and Hailstorms Hit Telangana

On Thursday, thunderstorms, hailstorms, and strong winds severely affected regions across north, south, and central Telangana. The adverse weather conditions resulted in the loss of five lives in separate incidents.

Rains, accompanied by gusty winds and lightning, began in the afternoon and continued well into the night, affecting normal life in Hyderabad and neighboring districts.

Damage to Crops and Loss of Life

The heavy rainfall inundated low-lying areas and roads, disrupting vehicular traffic. Several trees were uprooted across the city due to strong winds.

Two agricultural laborers in Nagarkurnool district and two others in Jogulamba Gadwal district died from lightning strikes. A person in Siddipet district was killed when a wall collapsed due to the heavy rainfall.

Water also entered houses in low-lying areas in Mahabubabad and Bhadradri Kothagudem districts, while strong winds blew off roofs of houses in many places.

Extensive Crop Damage in Various Districts

The maize crop in Mahabubabad district suffered significant damage, and farmers have called for government assistance. Mango crops were severely impacted in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Medchal Malkajgiri, Medak, and Sangareddy districts.

In Nizamabad district, thunderstorms damaged paddy crops, while similar destruction was reported in Mulugu, Vikarabad, Mahabubnagar, Adilabad, and Mancherial districts.

A Second Wave of Unseasonal Rains

This incident marks the second occurrence of unseasonal rains damaging crops in Telangana within a month. Farmers are now facing financial hardships, with several crops lost to the unpredictable weather.

Musi River Floods Triggered by Heavy Rains

The heavy rains also led to flooding in the Musi River in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district. Water from the river flowed over a low-level bridge near Bheemalingam, causing disruptions to the movement of vehicles and people traveling to Sangam village in Valigonda mandal and Bollepalle in Bhuvanagiri mandal.

Locals are now demanding the construction of a high-level bridge across the river to prevent such disruptions in the future.

Yellow Alert Issued for Several Districts

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for several districts, including Hyderabad. Thunderstorms, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph), are expected at isolated places in the Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvangiri, Rangareddy, Hyderabad, Medchal Malkajigiri, Vikarabad, Janagaon, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthi, Narayanpet, and Jogulamba Gadwal districts on Friday.

The maximum temperatures in these areas are likely to fall by 2 to 3 degrees and are expected to gradually rise by 2 to 3 degrees in the coming days.
