227 arrested for triggering violence in UP

Violent demonstrations took place in Prayagraj, Saharanpur, Saharanpur, Hathras and Ambedkar Nagar in which several people including policemen were injured.

Lucknow: Altogether 227 people have been arrested by Uttar Pradesh police in connection with violence that broke out during protests in several cities of the state after Friday prayers against the remarks on the Prophet and demanded arrest of Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal.

Violent demonstrations took place in Prayagraj, Saharanpur, Saharanpur, Hathras and Ambedkar Nagar in which several people including policemen were injured.

State Additional Chief Secretary Home Awanish Awasthi said on Saturday that the situation has been normalised in all the places and 227 arrests were made till 7 am.

CM Yogi Adityanath has given instructions for strict action against all anti-social elements regarding violent incidents in Uttar Pradesh.

In these incidents, the police have arrested 48 from Saharanpur, 68 from Prayagraj, 50 from Hathras, 28 from Ambedkarnagar, 25 from Moradabad and 8 from Firozabad.

ADG (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar said that 227 people who created nuisance in six districts of the state including Saharanpur, Prayagraj have been arrested so far. He said that all those guilty of disturbing the peace and creating disturbance have been identified and strict action will be taken against these people.

Charges will be registered against them under serious sections and the damage caused to government and private properties will also be recovered from them, he added.
