6.4 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Nepal, Tremors Felt Across North India
A powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake originating in Nepal jolted several parts of North India, including Delhi-NCR. Residents were advised to stay cautious due to potential aftershocks.
A powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.4 struck Nepal on the night of November 3, 2023, sending shockwaves across several parts of North India, including the Delhi-NCR region. The tremors, which were felt as far as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Haryana, prompted residents to evacuate their homes and buildings, fearing aftershocks.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed the earthquake’s magnitude and reported its epicenter in Nepal’s Lamidanda area, Jajarkot district. The quake occurred at a depth of 10 km, intensifying its impact across a broad region. This seismic activity is the latest in a series of tremors that have been felt in the Delhi-NCR area in recent times. Notably, another significant earthquake of magnitude 6.1 had struck Nepal on October 22, with its tremors also reaching the Delhi-NCR region.
Residents across affected areas recounted their experiences, describing the tremors as strong and lasting for several seconds. In Patna, Bihar, people rushed out of their homes as the ground shook. “I was watching TV when I felt dizzy. I then saw the news about the earthquake and immediately evacuated my home,” shared Tushar, a resident of Noida. Similar accounts came from other parts of North India, with many emphasizing the strength and duration of the tremors.
Seismologists and experts have been monitoring the situation closely. Ajay Paul, a renowned seismologist, pointed out that the earthquake’s epicenter was in a region of Nepal close to the site of previous quakes. He identified this region as the central belt of Nepal, known for its “active energy releasing sectors.” Paul also advised residents to remain alert and be prepared for potential aftershocks.
In Nepal, the earthquake’s aftermath was more direct and devastating. Reports emerged of injuries, with visuals showing ambulances rushing to aid the affected. Videos from Jajarkot, the earthquake’s epicenter, depicted scenes of panic and urgency as people sought medical attention for the injured. Additionally, there were instances of property damage, with images revealing cracked walls resulting from the quake’s impact.
This recent seismic activity serves as a stark reminder of the tectonic vulnerabilities of the region. With the Himalayas acting as a seismic hotspot, experts have continually stressed the importance of preparedness and infrastructure resilience. As recovery efforts continue, authorities are also emphasizing the significance of public awareness and safety protocols during such events.
In light of these events, residents are advised to stay informed, follow safety guidelines, and be prepared for any aftershocks that may follow. The importance of open spaces during tremors and the dangers of re-entering buildings immediately after a quake are being reiterated by safety experts.
