Fast-Track Preparations for Sankranti Kite Festival
With Sankranti approaching, the government has directed officials to complete key works at multiple lakes so that citizens can safely enjoy kite-flying festivities. The focus is on cleanliness, accessibility, and public comfort as part of the HYDRAA lake development for Sankranti Kite Festival in Hyderabad.

Commissioner Reviews Ground-Level Progress
The Commissioner of HYDRAA, A. V. Ranganath, conducted field inspections to review ongoing works. He visited Nalla Cheruvu at Tammidikunta and Kukatpally, assessing progress and issuing on-the-spot instructions to officials.
During the inspection, the Commissioner stressed that only treated water from Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) must enter lakes and that direct sewage discharge must be completely stopped. He also instructed officials to maintain cleanliness around STPs by properly utilising nearby government land.
Green Spaces and Public Facilities in Focus
As part of the HYDRAA lake development for Sankranti Kite Festival in Hyderabad, officials have been asked to develop lakes as tourist- and family-friendly destinations.
Key directions include:
- 🌿 Improving green cover around lake boundaries
- 🚶 Developing parks and walking tracks
- 🪑 Creating shaded seating areas for senior citizens

These steps aim to ensure the lakes remain active public spaces even after the festival.
Inter-Department Coordination for Smooth Celebrations
To ensure hassle-free Sankranti Kite Festival celebrations, coordination has been ordered between GHMC, tourism officials, and other departments.
Priority arrangements include:

- 🚗 Organised parking areas for visitors
As some development works are still ongoing, officials have also been told to carry out regular water sprinkling to control dust.
Connecting Lakes to Musi River Rejuvenation
In line with the broader Musi River rejuvenation programme, HYDRAA has been directed to strengthen the lake–river network.
Planned measures include:
- Construction of proper inlets and outlets
- Development of rainwater channels to guide runoff into lakes
- Speeding up STP installations to maintain water levels post-monsoon
From Encroachments to Festival Venues
Several lakes once affected by heavy encroachments are now emerging as cultural hubs. Recently, Bathukamma Kunta at Amberpet successfully hosted Bathukamma celebrations. This Sankranti, kite festivals will be organised at:
- Nalla Cheruvu, Tammidikunta
- Nalla Cheruvu, Kukatpally (Madhapur area)
- Bum-Rukn-ud-Daula Lake, Patbasthi
Out of the six lakes included in HYDRAA’s first rejuvenation phase, works are still in progress at Nalla Cheruvu, Uppal, and Sunnam Cheruvu, Madhapur.
Citizens Praise Lake Revival Efforts
Residents have welcomed the transformation, noting that the six lakes originally spread over about 105 acres and now cover nearly 180 acres after encroachment removal. The recovery of 75 acres of lake land on the city’s outskirts has been hailed as a major achievement under the HYDRAA lake development for Sankranti Kite Festival in Hyderabad initiative.
