The Telangana government approved name changes for several BC castes, including Budabukkala to Shiva Kshatriya and Dommara to Gada Vamshiya, to ensure dignity in nomenclature.

Hyderabad: The Telangana government has approved name changes for several Backward Classes (BC) castes after reviewing concerns over the derogatory nature of certain caste names. The decision was taken following recommendations made by the State BC Commission, and the Principal Secretary of the BC Welfare Department has issued directives to implement the revised caste names.

Telangana Govt Approves BC Caste Name Changes

The Telangana government stated that the renaming exercise was undertaken to ensure dignity in nomenclature for several communities listed under Backward Classes categories.

According to the official announcement, the changes were approved after examining concerns raised regarding caste names considered derogatory in nature.

The directives were issued by the Principal Secretary of the BC Welfare Department following recommendations from the State BC Commission.

‘Budabukkala’ Renamed as ‘Shiva Kshatriya’

The caste name “Budabukkala,” which was listed at number 4 under Group-A, has now been officially renamed as “Shiva Kshatriya.”

‘Vannar’ Replaced With ‘Dhobi’

The government also removed the “Vannar” designation and replaced it with “Dhobi.”

Officials clarified that the names Rajaka, Chakali, or Dhobi can be used in practice.

‘Dommara’ Changed to ‘Gada Vamshiya’

The caste name “Dommara,” which was listed at number 7, has now been changed to “Gada Vamshiya.”

‘Pichhakuntla’ Renamed as ‘Vamsharaj’

According to the government order, the caste name “Pichhakuntla,” which was listed at number 18, has been renamed as “Vamsharaj.”

Changes Made to ‘Veerabhhadriya’ Entry

The caste name “Veerabhhadriya,” listed at number 23, has now been revised to:

  • Veeramushthi
  • Netti Kotala
  • Veerabhhadriya

Group-D Caste Name ‘Mera’ Changed to ‘Meru’

In Group-D, the caste previously known as “Mera,” listed at number 5, has been officially renamed as “Meru.”

‘Shudra’ Removed and Replaced With ‘Tammali’

The government also announced that the caste name “Shudra,” which was listed at number 29, has been removed and replaced with “Tammali.”

Government Says Changes Aim to Ensure Respect and Dignity

The Telangana government stated that the decision was taken after reviewing concerns about the derogatory nature of certain caste names within the Backward Classes list.

Officials said the revised nomenclature would now be implemented officially following the directives issued by the BC Welfare Department.
