The Congress party on Saturday described the appointment of DK Shivakumar as the new Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader as a “smooth transition of power in Karnataka.” Senior party leaders said the development was emotional and historic after Siddaramaiah himself proposed Shivakumar’s name during the CLP meeting, paving the way for him to become the next Chief Minister of Karnataka.

Siddaramaiah Proposes DK Shivakumar’s Name
According to Congress General Secretary (Organisation) and Lok Sabha MP K.C. Venugopal, Siddaramaiah proposed the name of DK Shivakumar as the Congress Legislature Party leader during the meeting.
Senior Congress leader G. Parameshwara supported the proposal.
Addressing the media, Venugopal said:
“I’m very glad to say that everybody thought that this transition going to be a trouble for Congress Party. Everybody anticipated that. Some of you people (the media) also thought that a big shake up is going to happen in the Congress Party.”
He further stated:
“Siddaramaiah proved that his decision is same as that of the Congress and its High Command. This is Congress family’s attitude.”
Venugopal described the development as a “smooth transition of power in Karnataka” and called it “a proud moment for the Congress.”
Congress Leaders Hail Smooth Transition of Power in Karnataka
All India Congress Committee General Secretary in-charge for Karnataka Randeep Singh Surjewala said the entire Congress family stands united.
“The development and progress of Karnataka are our common goals,” Surjewala told reporters.
Congress leader Tanveer Sait said the atmosphere at the meeting was positive.
“The atmosphere was good. Congress is like a family. What happened was unexpected. Siddaramaiah himself mentioned DK Shivakumar’s name and made the proposal,” he said.
DK Shivakumar’s Selection Described as Emotional
Congress leader Dinesh Gundu Rao described the occasion as emotional.
He said:
“Today I think the way Siddaramaiah and D. K. Shivakumar and our general secretaries Venugopal and Surjewala handled it was really wonderful, emotional and it was like something that we will never forget in our lives.”
Congress leader Priyank Kharge also termed the atmosphere during the meeting as cordial and conducive.
“It was cordial. Siddaramaiah announced D. K. Shivakumar as the CLP leader,” he told IANS.
Kharge rejected suggestions that the decision had created any challenge within the party and said:
“Everybody will abide by the decision of the Congress High Command.”
He also emphasized that the Congress possesses a deep leadership bench.
Focus on Future Elections
Congress MLA N. A. Haris said both Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar would work together to prepare the party for the 2028 Karnataka Assembly elections and the 2029 General Elections.
He also expressed hope of being included in the new Cabinet.
“We are all aspirants of the new Cabinet, hope the party gives me an opportunity,” Haris said.
