Flood Threat in Hyderabad: HYDRAA Removes Nala Slabs, Orders Massive Desilting Drive in Kondapur, Shamshabad and Attapur

HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath found silted drains and covered nala slabs to be the main causes of flooding in Kondapur Jubilee Gardens, Shamshabad, Attapur and Ramdev Babanagar. Desilting and restoration works have been ordered.

HYDERABAD: HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath has identified accumulated silt in stormwater drains and slabs covering nalas as the main reasons behind flooding threats in Kondapur Jubilee Gardens, Shamshabad, Attapur and Ramdev Babanagar. During a field inspection of flood-prone areas, the Commissioner directed officials to remove slabs, undertake large-scale desilting works and install grills after the cleaning process is completed.

Traffic Joint Commissioner of Police D. Joel Davis and officials from various departments accompanied the Commissioner during the inspection.

Covered Slabs Preventing Desilting, Increasing Flood Risk

Officials informed the Commissioner that a system allowing stormwater drains to be opened every 3 metres would help ensure complete desilting operations.

During the inspection, officials found that hundreds of metres of drain slabs had been permanently covered, making it impossible to open them for cleaning. As a result, large quantities of garbage accumulated in low-lying areas, obstructing the natural flow of floodwater.

According to officials, floodwater flowing from Botanical Gardens, Sri Ram Nagar and the Kondapur Police Battalion area is supposed to reach Mondi Kunta near Meenakshi Towers. After Mondi Kunta fills up, the water should flow through an outlet into Mullakathva Cheruvu. However, due to heavily silted flood channels, the water flow was obstructed, resulting in flooding in Jubilee Gardens.

HYDRAA Removes Slabs, Begins Major Desilting Drive

HYDRAA has been removing slabs covering nalas and carrying out large-scale desilting works in Jubilee Gardens since Saturday.

Officials found that a flood channel that should have had a width of 2.15 metres near the Meenakshi Apartments premises had narrowed to about 1.5 metres. The installation of a pipeline further restricted the flow of water and contributed to flooding.

Officials also observed flaws in the interconnection of canals that were intended to divert sewage water instead of allowing floodwater to flow directly into Mondi Kunta Cheruvu. These shortcomings were also identified as factors contributing to flooding in the area.

After inspecting the issues one by one, HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath ordered officials to remove slabs wherever necessary and undertake complete desilting operations.

He instructed that once desilting is completed, the open drains should be covered with grills. The grills should be designed in such a way that they can be opened every 3 metres for future maintenance and cleaning.

Similar Flood Issues Found in Shamshabad, Attapur and Ramdev Babanagar

Officials confirmed that the same issues found in Kondapur Jubilee Gardens were also responsible for waterlogging in Shamshabad, Ramdev Babanagar and Attapur.

According to local officials, rainwater that should flow into Oora Kunta near Ramdev Babanagar was unable to enter due to inadequate inlets, resulting in water stagnation on the Shamshabad Airport Road.

Officials also pointed out that inlets carrying water to Mir Alam Cheruvu near PV Narasimha Rao Expressway Pillar No. 265 had become clogged, causing flooding problems.

Similarly, stormwater channels that should discharge water into the Musi River near Pillar No. 191 were not functioning properly, creating additional difficulties.

HYDRAA Orders Permanent Solutions Within a Week

HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath stated that flooding should not occur in these three locations if the drains remain clear.

He instructed HYDRAA Asset Division Inspectors and Special Vigilance Officers (SVOs) monitoring these areas to immediately remove slabs and take up cleaning works wherever drains become clogged.

The Commissioner said he would revisit the locations after one week and directed officials to present permanent solutions by then.

He also called upon the Irrigation, Municipal, Revenue, Police and Traffic Police departments to work jointly and ensure that residents do not face inconvenience due to flooding.

During his inspection of flood-prone areas in Kondapur Jubilee Gardens, Shamshabad, Attapur and Ramdev Babanagar, HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath found that silted drains, blocked inlets and permanently covered slabs were the major reasons behind flooding and water stagnation. HYDRAA has already started removing slabs and desilting drains, while officials have been instructed to install grills, clear clogged channels and provide permanent solutions within a week to prevent future flood threats.
