HYDRAA Clears 56 Truckloads of Silt from Aghapura Nala, Restores Floodwater Flow to Musi River

HYDRAA removed 56 truckloads of silt from the Aghapura Nala in Hyderabad, restoring floodwater flow to the Musi River after a week-long manual desilting operation.

Hyderabad: HYDRAA has completed a major desilting operation at the Aghapura Nala, removing 56 truckloads of silt that had blocked the floodwater channel. The nala, which carries floodwater from Mehdipatnam, Vijayanagar Colony, AC Guards, Mallepally, and Nampally to the Musi River, had become heavily clogged with waste, preventing the free flow of rainwater. The week-long operation was carried out manually as machinery could not be deployed in the narrow drain. The work was supervised daily by HYDRAA RFO Jayaprakash and SFO B. Charan Kumar.

Aghapura Nala Choked with Waste and Silt

According to HYDRAA, the Aghapura Nala was completely filled with waste and silt, leaving almost no space for floodwater to flow.

The nala is an important stormwater channel that carries floodwater from:

  • Mehdipatnam
  • Vijayanagar Colony
  • AC Guards
  • Mallepally
  • Nampally

to the Musi River.

Officials said the drain had become clogged with discarded household items, including:

  • Mattresses
  • Pillows
  • Bedsheets
  • Chairs
  • Rexine used for sofas

Photos and videos showing the accumulation of silt near the Darussalam culvert had gone viral on social media and also reached HYDRAA officials.

HYDRAA Begins Immediate Desilting Work

Following the reports, HYDRAA began the desilting operation the very next day.

Since heavy machinery could not be moved into the narrow nala, HYDRAA MET and DRF teams manually entered the drain to remove the accumulated silt.

HYDRAA provided the workers with:

  • Gloves
  • Knee-length gumboots
  • Masks
  • Tools required for desilting work

Officials said that while some workers did not wear the protective equipment, either because it interfered with their work or for other reasons, photographs of them working without safety gear were shared on social media with claims that they were working under hazardous conditions.

56 Truckloads of Silt Removed in One Week

Despite criticism, HYDRAA continued the operation with the sole objective of clearing the entire floodwater channel.

After one week of work, the teams removed 56 truckloads of silt, restoring the capacity of the nala to carry floodwater.

Officials also ensured that the removed silt was immediately transported away and not left at the site.

Officials Supervised Work Daily

The desilting work was monitored every day by:

  • HYDRAA RFO Jayaprakash
  • SFO B. Charan Kumar

Residents and commuters passing through the area have expressed surprise at the transformation after the cleaning of the floodwater channel.

HYDRAA said that a comparison of the old photographs and videos with the present condition clearly shows the improvement achieved through the desilting operation.

HYDRAA has restored the Aghapura Nala by removing 56 truckloads of silt during a week-long desilting drive. The operation cleared the floodwater channel that carries water from Mehdipatnam, Vijayanagar Colony, AC Guards, Mallepally, and Nampally to the Musi River. As machinery could not be used, HYDRAA MET and DRF teams carried out the work manually under the daily supervision of RFO Jayaprakash and SFO B. Charan Kumar. Officials said the cleaned nala will now allow smoother floodwater flow and help improve drainage during heavy rains.
