CM Revanth Reddy Eyes 2036 Olympics for Telangana, Launches Gachibowli Sports District and Young India Sports University
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy launched the Gachibowli Sports District and Young India Physical Education and Sports University, announced Telangana's bid to host the 2036 Olympics, unveiled an 82-acre sports university, and distributed Rs. 7.15 crore to six athletes.

Hyderabad: Expressing Telangana’s strong ambition to host the 2036 Olympic Games if India’s bid is successful, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy said the state is preparing Telangana and Hyderabad in every possible way to host the prestigious event. At Gachibowli Stadium, the Chief Minister, along with Indian Olympic Association President P.T. Usha, inaugurated the Gachibowli Sports District and the Young India Physical Education and Sports University (YIPESU). He also announced the construction of a world-class sports university and academy on 82 acres, targeted for inauguration in December 2028.

The Chief Minister said Telangana is committed to transforming itself into a major sports hub and is preparing Hyderabad to host global sporting events.
Telangana Wants to Host the 2036 Olympics
Addressing the gathering, Revanth Reddy said India is bidding to host the 2036 Olympics, and Telangana strongly aspires to become the venue for the Games.
He said the state is making all necessary preparations to ensure Hyderabad is fully equipped to host the Olympics if India secures the event.
The Chief Minister also announced that Telangana will host the Khelo India Games in November.
82-Acre Sports University to Open in December 2028
The Chief Minister announced that:
- A Sports University with modern facilities will be built on 82 acres.
- A world-class Sports Academy will also be established.
- The Young India Physical Education and Sports University is scheduled to be inaugurated in December 2028.
Clear Sports Policy for Telangana
Revanth Reddy said India has lagged behind in sports due to the absence of a clear sports policy.
He said Telangana has introduced a clear sports policy and stressed that sports training centres and universities across the country should also have a structured policy.
The Chief Minister explained that the Young India Sports University was named after Mahatma Gandhi’s “Young India” newspaper, which he published during India’s freedom movement.
Hyderabad’s Sports Infrastructure to Be Revived
The Chief Minister said Hyderabad had previously hosted the:
- Afro-Asian Games
- World Military Games
- Commonwealth Games
However, he said the city had not hosted any major sporting events over the last 20 years.
He noted that stadiums built 23 years ago were later used for weddings and political programmes, adding that the state government has decided to restore all such sports infrastructure.
Public-Private Partnership for Sports University
Revanth Reddy said the Sports University has been established under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model along with a new sports policy.
He said there would be no government interference in the university’s functioning.
The university has been established with the participation of:
- Dr. Sanjiv Goenka
- Abhinav Bindra
- Kapil Dev
- Kavya Maran
- Upasana Konidela
- Ravikanth Reddy
The Chief Minister said they have been given complete freedom in managing the university.
Government Jobs for Medal-Winning Sportspersons
The Chief Minister encouraged students to focus not only on academics but also on sports.
He announced that the Telangana Government would take responsibility for providing government jobs to athletes who bring glory to the country through outstanding performances in sports.
CM Calls Youth the Nation’s Greatest Asset
Revanth Reddy said young people are the country’s greatest asset.
He observed that India often finishes near the bottom of the Olympic medal tally and stressed the need to promote sports and support athletes.
He sought continued guidance and cooperation from P.T. Usha, saying there is much to learn from her journey and noting that her sporting achievements eventually led to her becoming a Rajya Sabha Member.
The Chief Minister also advised youngsters to remain focused, give 100 percent effort, and never lose confidence after a defeat.
He said one defeat should never discourage anyone and that setbacks should be treated as challenges.
Rs. 7.15 Crore Cash Incentives for Six Telangana Athletes
During the event, the Chief Minister distributed cash incentives worth Rs. 7.15 crore to six Telangana sportspersons for their outstanding achievements.
The recipients were:
- Deepti Divanji (Para Athletics Championship) – Rs. 50 lakh
- Dhanush Srikanth (Shooting – Deaflympics) – Rs. 2.10 crore
- Esha Singh (ISSF World Cup winner and world record holder) – Rs. 3.30 crore
- Nikhat Zareen (Boxing) – Rs. 60 lakh
- Tanishq Muralidhar Naidu (Shooting) – Rs. 53.65 lakh
- Ravuri Surabhi Bharadwaj (Shooting) – Rs. 10 lakh
The athletes received the incentive cheques from the Chief Minister.
Telangana to Host Major Sports Events
The Chief Minister also announced that Telangana will host several upcoming tournaments and leagues, including:
- 2026 Khelo India Youth Games (8th Edition)
- National Inter-District Junior Athletics Meet
- Hockey India League
- World Pickleball League
- Archery Premier League
- Tennis Premier League
He also launched the “Telangana Sports Knowledge on Wheels” programme during the event.
